Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business

The Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA) represents the interests of German companies for the promotion of trade and investment between Asia and Germany in both directions.

History and organization

The APA was founded in 1993 by the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl and leading representatives of German industry with the aim of " making up for the lead of companies from important competitive countries in their commitment to Asia ". Berthold Leibinger is considered a pioneer of the APA. The aim of expanding German business’s commitment to Asia has since been pursued in close cooperation with the German government . Since the establishment of the committee, German exports to this region have increased almost sixfold, and investments by German companies in Asia have risen by almost eighteen.

The sponsors of the committee were initially the BDI , the DIHK and the OAV . In 1999 the BGA and the BdB were added as further sponsors .

The founding chairman was the then CEO of Siemens AG Heinrich von Pierer . Other APA chairmen were the then Chairman of the Board of Management of BASF AG Jürgen Hambrecht (July 2006 to July 2010), the then Chairman of the Board of Management of Siemens AG, Peter Löscher (July 2010 to February 2014) and the then Chairman of the Management Board of Voith , Hubert Lienhard (February 2014 to February 2019). APA chairman has been Joe Kaeser , CEO of Siemens AG , since February 2019 . Friedolin Strack has been the APA management spokesman since January 2003.
