Jürgen Fitschen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jürgen Fitschen (born September 1, 1948 in Harsefeld ) is a German manager . From June 2012 to May 2016 he was Co-Chairman of the Board of Management of Deutsche Bank AG and from April 2013 to the beginning of 2016 President of the Association of German Banks .

Life and professional history

Jürgen Fitschen grew up as a farmer's son in Hollenbeck near Harsefeld and graduated from high school in 1966 at the Athenaeum Stade . After military service, he initially trained as a wholesale and foreign trade merchant in Hamburg and studied from 1971 to 1977 economics at the local university , which he graduated from a degree in business administration.

From 1975 Fitschen held various positions at Citibank , including corporate banking. In 1983 he became a member of the management of Citibank Germany and from 1986 was responsible for the bank's Asian business. In 1987 Fitschen went to Deutsche Bank AG and initially worked there in Hamburg at the subsidiary Deutsche Bank Asia, but in the same year switched to the parent company at Deutsche Bank in Bangkok and Tokyo , where he soon became General Manager Asia . In 1993 he became Divisional Director for Corporate Banking based in Singapore . In 2001 he finally returned to Germany and was appointed to the group board and was responsible for corporate and investment banking .

When Deutsche Bank restructured the Management Board under the leadership of Josef Ackermann in 2002, Fitschen became a member of the 'Group Executive Committee' located below the Management Board, where he was initially responsible for corporate banking and from 2004 for regional management worldwide and the Management Committee Germany directed. In the course of expanding the top management of the bank on April 1, 2009, Fitschen moved back to the Board of Management while retaining his position.

On July 25, 2011, Deutsche Bank announced that Jürgen Fitschen, together with the previous head of the investment banking department, Anshu Jain , would take over the chairmanship of the Board of Management from June 1, 2012, and thus both will succeed Josef Ackermann as “dual leaders” compete.

On December 12, 2012 it was reported that preliminary proceedings had been initiated against Fitschen on suspicion of VAT fraud in connection with the insolvency of the Kirch Group . Fitschen came into public criticism when he complained to the Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier about the raid on Deutsche Bank's headquarters that was carried out in this context and, in his opinion, was damaging to his reputation. However, the following legal proceedings ended in an acquittal for Fitschen and his four co-defendants.

On June 7, 2015, Deutsche Bank announced that Jain and Fitschen would prematurely terminate their contracts, which run until March 31, 2017. While Jain resigned on June 30, 2015, Fitschen, at the request of the Supervisory Board, continued to exercise his mandate until the end of the next Annual General Meeting, ie May 19, 2016.

Since then Fitschen has acted as Senior Adviser to the bank for national corporate banking.

Supervisory board and administrative board mandates, honorary positions

Fitschen has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Metro AG and of the Board of Directors of Kühne + Nagel since 2008 and was also a member of the Schott AG Supervisory Board until June 2012 . He is on the Supervisory Board of Ceconomy AG and has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Vonovia SE since May 2018 . Also in 2008, Fitschen succeeded Eckhard Rohkamm as chairman of the East Asian Association , one of the five supporting associations of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA), and remained in this position until 2014. His successor was Hans-Georg Frey . From 2010 to 2016 he was a member of the Supervisory Board of the Deutsche Sporthilfe Foundation and then moved to the Board of Trustees.

In 2013 he acted as the founding donor of the German Top Equestrian Foundation . Fitschen is a horse owner himself and provides show jumper Janne-Friederike Meyer with numerous horses he has acquired. For example, in 2012 he bought the mare Grace from Ludger Beerbaum for her with a view to the Olympics in Rio 2016 . Other successful S-horses under the rider and owned by Jürgen Fitschen are Goja and Charlotta .

Fitschen is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Science and Politics Foundation and the Board of Trustees of the Stifterverband .

Fitschen was President of the Association of German Banks from April 15, 2013 to the beginning of 2016 .

He is also a member of the Trilateral Commission and on the board of the Atlantik-Brücke as well as chairman of the board of trustees of the internationally renowned Kronberg Academy Foundation .
