The Citibank is one of the largest financial services groups in the world for private clients. It is part of Citigroup and has its headquarters in New York City . It was previously called the City Bank of New York and First National City Bank of New York .

history

It was founded in 1812 as the City Bank of New York . In 1894 it became the largest bank in the United States . In 1902 it began to expand internationally and became the first major US bank with an overseas department. By 1930 it had become the world's largest bank with 100 branches in 23 countries outside the United States. During the Second World War , the bank looked after the American business of the Nazi regime (for example with Ford ). In 1955 it was renamed The First National City Bank of New York , 1962 First National City Bank and 1976 Citibank . In 1989 the total assets of the parent company, then trading as Citicorp , were around 227 billion US dollars.

International presence

According to its own information, Citibank is represented in over 100 countries on six continents .

In July 2008, Citigroup announced that Crédit Mutuel is buying Citibank's German private customer business, at a price of EUR 4.9 billion plus the profits made in the 2008 financial year up to the date of the takeover. Crédit Mutuel was allowed to continue using the Citibank brand under license in Germany until March 2010. The corporate customer business, combined in Citigroup Global Markets Deutschland AG & Co. KGaA in Frankfurt am Main , remained with the Citibank Group. Due to the sale of the German Citibank to Credit Mutuel was on 22 February 2010 from the Citibank Germany the Targobank .

In December 2011 it was announced that Citibank Belgium NV's Belgian private customer business would be sold to Crédit Mutuel Nord Europe (CMNE). The final settlement took place on April 30, 2012. Information about the purchase price was not given. The contractual partners have agreed that the brand name can continue to be used temporarily under license. The new brand identity will be announced in due course. With the agreement, another company from the Citi group has become part of the Crédit Mutuel banking group. In the meantime it has been announced that Citibank Belgium will in future bear the observer name.
