He is the brother of Markus Beerbaum and the brother-in-law of Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum , both of whom are also active as show jumpers.

biography

Private

Ludger Beerbaum was born the son of Horst and Mathilde Beerbaum and has three siblings. In 1953 his father left the GDR, where the family's farm was located in Wotenick near Demmin, and lived in the Federal Republic near Detmold. Ludger Beerbaum attended high school and graduated from high school in 1983. Beerbaum broke off a degree in business administration prematurely in favor of show jumping. Beerbaum is a second marriage and has three children.

When Beerbaum was eight years old, his parents gave him his first pony , a Highland pony , although he had previously found little liking in horses . After the pony bit him badly on the arm, his interest in horses and equestrian sports died out for two years.

Later, Ludger Beerbaum was introduced to equestrian sport again by the father of a school friend , and he celebrated successes at the German Championships for Juniors and Young Riders at a young age , where he was runner-up in 1981 and 1982 respectively. He finished the European Young Rider Championships in 1984 with a bronze medal in both team and individual competitions.

In 1985 he gained a foothold in international tournament sport: at Hermann Schridde's request, he was given permission to start at the Maimarkt tournament in Mannheim , was also given the opportunity to compete at the CHIO Aachen and was part of a German national team in Dublin for the first time this year . From 1985 Beerbaum worked as a rider at the Paul Schockemöhles stable , who supported him in the following years. During this time he celebrated his first major successes, especially with the team Olympic victory at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 and winning the German championship .

After private differences with Schockemöhle, he moved to the stable of the entrepreneur Alexander Moksel in Buchloe in 1989 , who provided Beerbaum with a large number of excellent top horses . During this time, the successes accumulated, the greatest of which was winning the individual Olympic gold medal in 1992 in Barcelona . Silver and gold medals with the team at the World Equestrian Games in Stockholm in 1990 and in The Hague in 1994, as well as winning the German championships again in 1992 and 1993 , followed suit. The first World Cup victory by a German also stood out in 1993. Since that time, Beerbaum has definitely belonged to the top of the world of show jumping .

In 1995 he went into business for himself on a riding facility in Riesenbeck and with the help of new patrons , above all the entrepreneurial couple Dietrich Schulze and Madeleine Winter-Schulze , was able to keep many of his previous top horses. Further great successes followed, including a. Olympic team victories in 1996 and 2000 , another team world championship in 1998, several team and individual medals at European championships, five other German championships and three victories in the Riders Tour (see also under successes ). In 2001 Beerbaum judged himself:

"I have reached the zenith of my athletic career."

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Ludger Beerbaum was given the honor of leading the German athletes as the flag bearers during the opening ceremony . At the 2004 Olympic Games itself, Beerbaum made negative headlines when the German team was subsequently deprived of the team gold medal due to evidence of unauthorized medication from Beerbaum's horse Goldfever .

At the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, which took place in August and September 2006, he started with the ten-year-old gelding L'Espoir , with whom he won the bronze medal with the team and just barely missed the finals in the individual competition. He took 5th place in the overall ranking and refuted critics who had discussed the performance of his very young and inexperienced horse as insufficient before the start of the games and questioned the nomination.

On February 6, 2007 Ludger sold L'Espoir to Norway, where the gelding is now successfully ridden by Geir Gulliksen . Ludger Beerbaum explained about this controversial decision that it is quite normal for horses to be bought and sold. In July 2007, after being replaced by Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum at the beginning of September, he was back in first place in the world rankings after a long time. In August he made a significant contribution to winning the team silver medal during the European Championship in Mannheim. He was also able to assert himself in the individual competition there and won the bronze medal behind his sister-in-law Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and the current world champion (from Aachen 2006) Jos Lansink .

In June 2010, when he took part in the St. Gallen Nations Cup, he set the record for most starts in German show jumping competitions. Up to this point in time, Hans Günter Winkler had held this record with the 105th Nations Cup starts.

After he was not very successful in the second half of 2010, he slipped to 27th place in the world jumping rider rankings by May 2011. A bad position for his standards. In March 2012, Beerbaum was again third in the world rankings.

In September 2011 he won team gold with Gotha FRH at the European Championships in Madrid . In 2012 Beerbaum and his mare Gotha were among the Olympic aspirants. After a fall in Balve at the German championships, Beerbaum found that his mare was not in shape to take part in the Olympic Games . Thus, for the first time since 1988, he was not represented at the Games.

Also in 2013 and 2014, Beerbaum was part of the German championship team , both with Chiara . In June 2015 he contested his 125th Nations Cup for Germany at the CSIO in St. Gallen . He has already participated in 20 more Nations Cups than Hans Günter Winkler and 45 more Nations Cups than Franke Sloothaak (places two and three of the most popular Nations Cup riders for Germany) as a rider.

At the 2015 European Championships , Beerbaum was part of the German team with Chiara . In order to have a second top horse with a view to the Olympic Games, Madeleine Winter-Schulze bought the chestnut gelding Casello for Ludger Beerbaum . With Casello , Beerbaum was part of the victorious German team in the Nations Cup in Aachen and was nominated for the 2016 Summer Olympics with it .

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , Beerbaum and Casello won bronze with the German team. This was his 24 participation in an international championship. He then stated that the Nations Cup final in Barcelona would be his last start for the German national team. At this 134th Nations Cup for Germany, he was once again the final rider of the German team, which won the Nations Cup final here.

Shortly before the turn of the year 2017/2018, Beerbaum fell and suffered a multiple fracture of the upper arm. This kept him from starting tournaments for three months.

Ludger Beerbaum has been part of a team in the Global Champions League since 2017 (2017: Cannes Stars, since 2018: Berlin Eagles). At the Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix 2018 in Prague he came second with Casello .

further activities

In addition to his active sports career, Ludger Beerbaum runs a stallion station as well as a tournament and trading stable in Riesenbeck . Several trainers support Beerbaum with the training and presentation of the horses up to international championships. The Beerbaums team includes Henrik von Eckermann and Philipp Weishaupt , among others , Marco Kutscher worked for Beerbaum for many years .

In cooperation with Constantin Freiherr Heereman von Zuydtwyck , he had the equestrian center "Riesenbeck International", which opened in early 2015, built in Riesenbeck, which complements the tournament area of the Riesenbeck equestrian club. Seminars and courses are held here, as well as national and international tournaments.

Ludger Beerbaum has been helping children with cancer in Perm, Russia, for several years . Beerbaum is Vice President of the International Jumping Rider Club (IJRC), the advocacy group for show jumpers who are among the top 100 in the world rankings.

doping

During the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , Beerbaum's horse tested positive for the substance betamethasone . The substance is not used to improve performance, but in therapy, but according to the competition regulations - like many drugs - it is forbidden. Beerbaum claimed to have treated Goldfever's skin irritation with an ointment containing betamethasone , whereupon the substance got into the horse's bloodstream ; he did not manipulate performance. The list of substances prohibited in competition by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) divides the prohibited substances into doping substances, i.e. performance-enhancing agents, and substances used therapeutically. This classification plays a role in the assessment of the lock; As a result, Beerbaum was allowed to participate in the next Summer Olympics again. In September 2005, the Beerbaum / Goldfever couple was disqualified from the 2004 Olympic Games by the International Court of Justice (CAS). As a result, the deleted results were included in the evaluation and the German team fell back to 3rd place. Germany had to return the gold medals and the team subsequently received the bronze medal.

In May 2009, Beerbaum made negative headlines again when he confessed to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung : “Over the years I have established myself to make the most of what is possible. ... In the past I had the attitude: What is not found is allowed. ”He was then suspended from membership of any Nations Cup team by the German Equestrian Association until the DOSB Commission issued a statement on himself. At the end of July, the commission presented its interim report, which recommended that the German Equestrian Association regarding Ludger Beerbaum include him in a squad with certain conditions.
