The International Whitsun Tournament Wiesbaden ( spelling : Whitsun tournament ) is an international horse show that is held annually on the Whitsun weekend in the Schlosspark Biebrich in Wiesbaden . Its origins go back to 1929. In 2019, the tournament will be named Longines Whitsun Tournament Wiesbaden for the first time due to its new title sponsor .

The organizer of the Whitsun tournament is the Wiesbadener Reit- und Fahr-Club eV (WRFC). The tournament is traditionally supported by the Wiesbaden entrepreneurial family Dyckerhoff : Hans Dyckerhoff was a founding member of the WRFC, the revival after the Second World War is thanks to the long-time club president Wilhelm Dyckerhoff and Kristina Dyckerhoff has been the club's president since 1992.

The jumping competitions of the tournament are advertised as CSI  4 *, the dressage tests as CDI 5 *, eventing as CIC 3 * and the vaulting competitions as CVI masterclass. In addition, further jumping competitions of the tournament are planned separately as CSIYH 1 *, CSIAm-A and CSIAm-B.

Tournament history

Laura Kraut on Cedric at the most highly endowed jumping competition of the Whitsun tournament 2013

Two years after the founding of the Wiesbaden Riding and Driving Club, the first Whitsun tournament was held in 1929, the venue was the "Kleinfeldchen", today the home of SpVgg Nassau Wiesbaden . Since the "small field" turned out to be too small for the crowd, the tournament was held for two years at the Erbenheim racecourse , but the course here was too tough. From 1932 to 1939 the WRFC had its own tournament site "Unter den Eichen" in the north of Wiesbaden, where the Whitsun tournament was held. In 1934 an eventing test (then still called "Military") was organized for the first time, but this was again carried out in Erbenheim.

After the war years, efforts were made again from 1948 to host the tournament again. Since the “Unter den Eichen” course was no longer available, Wilhelm Dyckerhoff (President of the WRFC from 1950 to 1987) had the idea of holding the tournament in the Biebrich Castle Park. In the same year, the American city command of Wiesbaden, with a significant contribution from Earl Foster Thomson (Colonel and successful rider), gave the approval for the construction of the tournament site. This was built on the site of today's dressage arena, directly in front of Biebrich Castle , and the tournament was held again at Whitsun 1949.

With support from the German and American sides, the new tournament site was built in 1951 on the site of the former princess pond. This tree-lined place is still the jumping area of the tournament today. From 1952 the tournament was announced internationally, from 1958 the dressage tests were advertised as CDIO .

In the 1970s the tournament lost some of its importance. In 1983 a dressage freestyle was held for the first time, which has been held at Grand Prix level since 1990 . In 1984 today's sandpit dressage was built in front of the castle, and all dressage competitions moved here from the jumping arena. After a long break, the dressage tests have been advertised internationally again since 1989.

In 2001, due to the large outbreak of foot and mouth disease (which does not affect horses), the tournament was postponed for one year to September, the same year the tournament was part of the Riders Tour for the first time (until 2018). In 2012 and 2013 the tournament was also part of the Global Champions Tour and was therefore advertised as CSI 5 *, the highest tournament class in show jumping .

The 80th Whitsun tournament was held in 2016.

In 2020, the 84th edition of the Wiesbaden Whitsun tournament was canceled due to the ongoing corona pandemic and the associated protective measures.

program

Participating unicorn carriage in the 2013 parade

Since 1993, the tournament has been opened on the Tuesday evening before Pentecost with a horse- drawn carriage parade through Wiesbaden city center. The goal of the parade is the palace square in front of the city palace , where it is received by numerous spectators. 30 carriages, some of them historical, and numerous riders take part in the annual parade.

The tournament covers four days from Friday to Whit Monday. As of 2012, Friday is the starting day with the first jumping competitions of the CSI 5 * and the first international amateur jumping competitions (CSIAm-A / CSIAm-B) as well as the dressage and jumping section tests of the CIC 3 *. The first day of the tournament is concluded by the "Wiesbaden Horse Night", a show event.

Saturday marks the start of the dressage and vaulting tests on the dressage arena. In addition, the CIC 3 * cross-country test will take place on Saturday. For the show jumpers, the main test took place on this day in 2012 and 2013, the “GCT Grand Prix” (evaluation test of the Global Champions Tour) on Saturday evening.

On Pentecost Sunday the qualification for the Grand Prix of show jumping and the first test of the CSIYH 1 * (show jumping competition for seven and eight year old horses) take place, the day ends with the Grand Prix Freestyle under floodlights in front of the castle. The tournament ends on Whit Monday, the important final tests on this day are the Grand Prix in show jumping and the Grand Prix Spécial on the dressage arena.

The Grand Prix Spécial is the most important dressage test of the Wiesbaden Whitsun tournament. It will be held early on Sunday afternoon and in 2018 was endowed with 26,000 euros.

Winner (from 1989):

Wiesbaden Grand Prix

First held in 1958, the Wiesbaden Grand Prix is the most highly endowed and most important jumping competition of the tournament. In 2012 and 2013 the previous Grand Prize was renamed the State Capital of Wiesbaden Prize . It marks the end of the tournament. The Wiesbaden Grand Prix was a special stage of the Riders Tour from 2001 to 2018 . When it was first held , it was endowed with 10,000 DM ; in 2018 it was 150,000 euros.

Winner:

Global Champions Tour stage

Award ceremony of the 2013 Global Champions Tour special stage

In the years when the Whitsun tournament was the Global Champions Tour tournament, a large jumping competition was added to the Saturday afternoon. This Global Champions Tour special test was an international jumping competition with two rounds and jump-off . The obstacles in the test were up to 1.60 meters high and the prize money was € 285,000. The exam sponsor was the Lotterie-Treuhandgesellschaft Hessen ("Lotto Hessen Prize"). Since the test was by far the most highly endowed test of the CSI 5 * tournament, this test was rated by the FEI as the Grand Prize of the tournament.

Winner:

versatility

After an eventing test ("Military") was held in connection with the Whitsun tournament for the first time in the 1930s, an eventing event was advertised internationally for the first time in Wiesbaden in 1998. When the tournament was moved to September in 2001 due to foot and mouth disease, an eventing competition was not held. It stayed that way until 2007, when a CIC 2 * was held again in 2008. In the following year the exam was upgraded and is carried out annually as CIC 3 *.

The Wiesbaden eventing experience was further upgraded in 2017, the CIC 3 * became part of the Event Rider Masters (ERM) tournament series . As a result, the prize money quadrupled from 15,000 euros to 60,000 euros. Due to the tight schedule of the tournament, the starting field at the CIC only comprised around 30 starters until 2017. In 2018, a second CIC 3 * test was created so that the riders have the opportunity to bring a second horse to the start. Due to the new classification system for versatility tests that has been in effect since the beginning of 2019, the tests are referred to as CCI 4 * -S.

Winner (since 1998):

Vaulting

Joanne and Hannah Eccles at the 2013 vaulting test

As part of the Wiesbaden Pentecost tournament, the prize for the best in vaulting was held until 2007. This event has been awarded by the German Equestrian Association since 2008 and has not taken place in Wiesbaden since then. The prize of the best is one of the most important nationwide events in vaulting and viewing at the international championships.

The vaulting tests in Wiesbaden were advertised internationally in 2005, and this has been the case without interruption since 2007. There are tests in group vaulting as well as individual vaulting for women and men. Since 2013, a pas de deux (double vaulting) rating has also been held.

2013

Dirk Schrade on King Artus in the jumping competition the day before the accident

The 2013 tournament was overshadowed by the sudden death of 17-year-old gelding King Arthur , London team Olympic champion with Dirk Schrade . Although, according to the veterinarian's testimony, the animal was in excellent shape, after jumping in the international three-star short event at the prize of the Prof. Heicke and Dyckerhoff families, an aorta was ruptured. The horse collapsed while still in the jumping oval, only a few meters behind the finish line. Due to these events, the tournament management decided, in consultation with the participants of the examination, to only hold a reduced award ceremony.

media

The main exam on Whit Monday is traditionally broadcast by hr television , and in 2018 there was a live broadcast of 75 minutes. The special stage of the Global Champions Tour on Saturday was broadcast by Global Champions Tour media partner Eurosport on Saturday evening.

The Wiesbaden-based German IPTV broadcaster ClipMyHorse, which was launched at the end of 2007, broadcast live the dressage tests of the 2008 International Whitsun tournament as one of its first tournaments. ClipMyHorse has been broadcasting all of the tournament's exams (with the exception of TV broadcasts) live since 2009. For the first time in 2017, the eventing cross-country course was broadcast live on the internet. The website of the Global Champions Tour also offered a live stream of the CSI-5 * exams.

The Wiesbadener Kurier reports locally in its daily newspapers and on its website. Annually printed special publications on the tournament provide background reports on riders, horses and tests.
