Dirk Schrade (born June 29, 1978 in Münsingen ) is a German eventing rider .

Schrade is a trained banker and master horse economist . He starts for the rural breeding, riding and driving club Volmarstein .

Career

Dirk Schrade was born in Münsingen and grew up in neighboring Gomadingen . He learned to ride from his father, who gave him riding lessons for the first time at the foal farm in Mehrstetten at the age of eight. After initially riding a Haflinger , he was provided with the pony Chirocco , with which he achieved his first successes in competitions and began eventing. With this he also wanted to take part in the German championships of pony eventing riders, but Chirocco could not be used for the championships at short notice. He made up for the start of the pony championships in 1992 with Oweron , whom he rode for the first time four days before the championship.

Due to the family's limited financial possibilities, Schrade continued to rely on foreign horses. He had his sporting breakthrough with MacIntosh , with whom he took part in the German Junior Championships in 1995 and 1996. In 1997 he took part in the German and European Championships for Young Riders , whereupon he was given the opportunity to do his military service at the sports school of the Bundeswehr in Warendorf. After that year he first went back to Gomadingen, where he completed his training as a banker and worked in this profession for six months.

Already at the Bundeswehr sports school, the desire was awakened in him to make riding his profession. He now implemented this and began an apprenticeship as a horse manager at the DOKR federal performance center in Warendorf , which he completed with the Stensbeck plaque due to his good performance . In 2001 he went to Elmar Lesch , in whose stable in Bavendorf he worked for a year. In 2002 he was accepted into the perspective group for young eventing riders and moved back to Warendorf.

He stayed here until 2009. That year he started his own business in the Haßlinghausen district of Sprockhövel . Dirk Schrade, who is now a master horse manager, runs a training stable here. In addition to training horses, he also trains horse landlords and other riders, such as the Japanese riders Yoishiaki Oiwa and Kenki Satō . In November 2017, Schrade left Sprockhövel and moved to Heidmühlen . Here he runs a riding facility together with Christian Hess.

Participation in championships

At the German Championships Schrade has narrowly missed a medal several times, in 2006, 2010, 2011 and 2012 he achieved fourth place. At the European Championships in 2003 and the World Championships in 2006, Schrade was a substitute for the German team, and in 2003 he did not finish his individual competition in Punchestown . Due to the injury to his horse, he was unable to fight for qualification for the 2008 Olympic Games as he had hoped . Thus, the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky became the first major event outside of Europe in which he could actively participate with his horse Gadget de la Cere . With Michael Jung , Ingrid Klimke and Andreas Dibowski he finished fifth in the team classification, although a better result was prevented by a fall from Schrade. The 2011 European Eventing Championships in Luhmühlen went better . Behind Jung, Sandra Auffarth and Frank Ostholt , he finished fourth and thus narrowly missed a first international medal.

Schrade was able to place himself well several times in important horse shows. In 2009 he finished second behind Oliver Townend in the overall ranking of the HSBC FEI Classics and won the Étoiles de Pau tournament . At the CHIO in Aachen he won the team championship for the first time in 2009 with Dibowski, Klimke and Bettina Hoy on King Artus , again in 2010 with Jung, Klimke and Dibowski and in 2012 with Auffahrt, Jung and Klimke. In 2010, he finished third behind Andrew Nicholson and Dibowski.

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London , Schrade started with King Arthur . He was part of the victorious German team. He also won the title with the German team at the European Championships in 2013 and 2015 and at the World Equestrian Games in 2014 , both on Hop and Skip . In the individual ratings of the European Championships, he finished sixth in 2013 and seventh in 2015.

In 2016, Schrade aimed to take part in the Olympic Games with Hop and Skip . Since he was not nominated for the Olympic squad at the CHIO Aachen , he said goodbye to Hop and Skip from the sport.
