Frank Henry (rider)

Frank Sherman Henry (born December 15, 1909 in Cambridge , New York , † August 25, 1989 in Chesterfield , Missouri ) was an American rider and Olympic champion .

Life

As a child, Frank Henry enjoyed riding the family horse. In 1933 he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and joined the cavalry , which had been his wish. There he got good opportunities for training and participation in equestrian competitions. In the following years, up to his retirement as brigadier general in 1963, he served in the United States Army , during World War II in the United States Department of War .

In 1940 Henry was already nominated for the Olympic Games planned in Tokyo , which were canceled because of the Second World War. In 1948 he started at the Olympic Games in London , for this purpose the American team, which consisted only of military personnel, went to Munich in 1947 . Frank Henry won three medals, which no other US rider has achieved to date (2012): With the team ( Charles Anderson , Earl Foster Thomson ) he won gold in eventing on Swing Low as well as silver in individual eventing and with the Team in dressage ( Robert Borg , Earl Foster Thomson) on Reno Overdo .
