Peter Thomsen (born April 4, 1961 in Flensburg ) is a German eventing rider .

Career

Peter Thomsen grew up on a farm and came into contact with horses and equestrian sports at an early age. He gained his first riding experience on a Shetland pony mare. When Thomsen was thrown from this mare on a ride at the age of about 10 and suffered multiple fractures of the arm, he initially gave up riding. When he was 14 he got a pony , with which he began to ride in tournaments, initially with little success. A year later he got the horse with the mare Tessa , which brought him his first successes in the sport; with Tessa he also rode his first cross-country test. In 1985 he rode his first M-level eventing with Bassil (a son of Tessa ) in Langenhagen and came second behind Hinrich Romeike .

This was followed by years of apprenticeship with Thomas Rüder , eventing rider and father of Kai and Hans-Thorben Rüder , on the island of Fehmarn. He then learned from Dieter Baumann in Luhmühlen . In 1987 he took part in a German championship for the first time in Siekrug and was 15th.

His breakthrough came with the gray mare White Girl . With this he started in 1993 at his first European championship and was the best German rider in the individual ranking. In Achselschwang he finished fourth with the team and fifth in the individual. That year White Girl was voted "Horse of the Year 1993".

With his wife Kirsten Thomsen he became German Vice Team Champion in 2005. In 2007 he and the team won the eventing competition at the CHIO Aachen .

Thomsen lives in Lindewitt . He and his wife have two children. He is a trained business administrator (FH) . In addition to riding, he worked as a civil servant at Deutsche Post AG until 2019 in the sales and logistics area.

Participation in international championships

In total, Peter Thomsen competed in five world and European championships. 1996 was the year of his first participation in the Olympics for Thomsen, but White Girl injured herself in the dressage test. In 2000 and 2004 he was a reserve rider and therefore did not take part in the games.

In August 2008 Thomsen became Olympic champion in eventing at the Olympic Games in Hong Kong together with Ingrid Klimke , Hinrich Romeike, Andreas Dibowski and Frank Ostholt and celebrated his greatest success. Since his horse The Ghost of Hamish shied away from cross-country riding , he could not achieve a top placement in the individual competition. Four years later he took part in the Olympic Games again in London , this time with Barny . With the team he won the gold medal again. At the European Championships in 2011, 2013 and 2015 Thomsen competed as an individual rider.
