Richard Meade

Richard John Hannay Meade , OBE (born December 4, 1938 in Chepstow , Monmouthshire , Wales - † January 8, 2015 ) was a British eventing rider . He was three times Olympic champion as well as two world and two European champions.

Career

Meade was one of the most successful eventing riders in the world during the 1960s and 1970s. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he won the gold medal in the team standings, and in the individual standings, he finished fourth. In 1972 in Munich he won both the individual and the team classification.

At world championships Meade won two more gold medals with the team, 1970 in Punchestown and 1982 in Luhmühlen . At European Championships , he won a total of four team medals; the gold in Moscow in 1965 , in Punchestown in 1967 and in Burghley in 1971, and the bronze in Kiev in 1973 . There was also a silver individual medal in Burghley in 1966. Other significant successes were victories at the Burghley Horse Trials in 1964 and at the Badminton Horse Trials in 1970.

After retiring from top-class sport, Meade worked as an equestrian advisor (operation and management of stud farms, organization of equestrian events, training, horse health, animal welfare). From 1989 to 1992 he was President of the British Equestrian Federation. In 2001 Meade was expelled from the animal welfare organization RSCPA . He had organized a campaign to induce supporters of the controversial fox hunt to join in order to change the attitude of the RRSPCA in their favor.

Meade died on January 8, 2015, at the age of 76, from cancer that he was diagnosed with in October 2014.

Richard Meade was married and had a daughter and two sons from this marriage. One of these sons, Harry Meade , born in 1983 , is also an eventing rider.
