Badminton Horse Trials
The Badminton Horse Trials are an annual three-day eventing event . They are at Badminton House held, the country seat of the Dukes of Beaufort in Chipping Sodbury in the English county of Gloucestershire .
The world equestrian federation FEI counts the competition among the six most important events worldwide in the category CCI **** (the others are the Burghley Horse Trials , the Rolex Kentucky Three Day , the Australian International Three Day Event , the Luhmühlen Versatility and the Étoiles de Pau ). The three most traditional competitions in this category (Badminton, Burghley, Kentucky) are collectively referred to as the " Grand Slam of Eventing ". The results of the five CCI **** events in the northern hemisphere have also produced an overall ranking created by the FEI since 2008 ( HSBC FEI Classics ™); the top five in this ranking will receive a total of US $ 333,000 in prize money.
Up to a quarter of a million visitors attend the cross-country ride, making the Badminton Horse Trials the UK's most popular paid sporting event.
The Badminton Horse Trials were first organized in 1949 by Henry Somerset, 10th Duke of Beaufort . After competing at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London , this was only the country's second three-day eventing event. The 1953 event counted as the European Championship. At the request of Queen Elizabeth II , the event was moved to Windsor in 1955 , and the first television broadcast followed in 1956. The Badminton Horse Trials had to be canceled several times; 1966, 1975, 1987 and 2012 because of bad weather, 2001 because of foot and mouth disease . Mitsubishi Motors has been the main sponsor since 1992 .
