Every year, in mid-June, an international all- round horse show takes place in Luhmühlen . The main test of this tournament is advertised as CCI 5 * -L (until 2018 referred to as CCI 4 *) and is therefore the only tournament on the European mainland besides the tournament in Pau (France) that is held in this highest category for eventing tournaments.

The prize money in the five-star competition is € 100,000. The exam was part of the FEI Classics held from 2008 to 2017 .

In addition to the five-star competition, there is also a CCI 4 * -S (referred to as CIC 3 * until 2018), the “ Messmer Trophy”. Originally, this was dominated by young horses and young riders. As a regular framework for the German championships , the best German couples now often start here instead of in the CCI 5 * -L. The Messmer Trophy is endowed with € 20,000.

On 26./27. May 1923 the organizing club, the horse breeding and riding club Luhmühlen, held the first club tournament. In 1931 a 400-seat grandstand was built. This was again replaced in 1992 by a new, modern grandstand.

Finally, after the Second World War, Luhmühlen rose as an event location. It began in 1956 with the Stubbendorf eventing test; In 1958 the Olympic preparation of the military (outdated term for eventing equestrian) was added. This paved the way for advancement to an internationally significant eventing tournament that has shaped the place ever since.

Between the tournaments in 2010 and 2011, in the run-up to the European championships, the area of the tournament area was largely renovated. In addition to the largely new construction of the grandstand, paved parking spaces, paved areas for stables, a new entrance area and a multi-purpose building for the registration office, press center and judges' tower were created. Instead of the previous lawn tournament and preparation areas, there will be a sand court for the jumping competition , two sand courts for dressage and two warm-up areas . It was also planned to use the new tournament site for other non-equestrian events.

In 2011 the European championships for eventing riders were held in Luhmühlen . This was the fifth time since 1975, 1979, 1987 and 1999 that the European Championships were held in Luhmühlen. Overall, it was the thirtieth time since 1953 that European titles in individual and team competitions were ridden here.

The death of Benjamin Winter as a result of a fall and the horse ridden by Tom Crisp Liberal through an aortic rupture overshadowed the tournament of 2014. At the request of mother Winters, who the riders joined, the tournament was continued, on the basis of the The CIC 3 * award of the German championship title, however, was waived. Instead, the tournament Sunday was held as a silent event, without music, with flags at half-mast and with a mourning ceremony and a minute's silence.

For the 60th anniversary of the tournament in 2017, the course designer changed the cross-country course: The task was taken over by the Briton Mike Etherington-Smith, who was already responsible for the cross-country courses at the Olympic Games on several occasions. From 2005 to 2016, Mark Phillips designed the Luhmühlen off-road course.
