Benjamin "Ben" Winter (born December 30, 1988 in Dortmund ; † June 14, 2014 in Hamburg ) was a German eventing rider and corporal in the Bundeswehr .

Career

In 2005 he became the Westphalian Junior Champion. This qualified him for the German championship in Krusemark . In 2006 he won bronze at the German Junior Championship and gold with the team at the European Championship in Ireland . In 2007 he took 6th and 8th place with Wild Thing Z and Gigolo in the German Young Rider Championship and won team bronze at the European Championship in Blair Castle, Scotland . He also became the Westphalian Vice-Champion. In 2008 he won bronze again at the German championship, won the Prize of the Best in Warendorf and won team silver at the European championship in Kreuth , in the individual he was fourth. In 2009, Winter won gold with Wild Thing Z at the German Young Rider Championships and team silver at the European Championships.

From summer 2009 he was a member of the perspective group at the German Olympics Committee for Equestrian in Warendorf . There he also completed an apprenticeship as a horse manager . From November 2012 he was a member of the sports promotion group at the Bundeswehr sports school in Warendorf.

After the end of his time as a young rider, he was accepted into the German B-team eventing. At the end of 2011 Benjamin Winter was appointed to the Olympic squad (A-squad). He contested his first championship after the young rider's time at the 2011 European Championships in Luhmühlen . Here he competed as an individual rider with Wild Thing Z and finished 13th. With his success at the European Championships, he met the requirements for being awarded the Golden Riding Badge. This was awarded to him on November 12, 2011 as part of the championship ball in Warendorf.

Also for the European Championships in 2013 he was nominated as an individual rider, with Ispo he came on rank 18. With the Westphalian team he won in 2013 on the German team championships in Fuerstenau gold, in individual, he finished in Schenefeld with Wild Thing Z sixth. On his debut at the CHIO Aachen in the same year, he reached eighth place in the CICO 3 * with Revenue . At the Westphalian championships in 2014, which were held as part of the CIC 2 * Everswinkel, Winter achieved the championship title with Catch my Thing .

Benjamin Winter died on June 14, 2014 at the Boberg Accident Hospital as a result of a severe traumatic brain injury that he suffered when he fell while riding his second horse Ispo at the CCI 4 * Luhmühlen . He had previously successfully completed the cross-country ride with Wild Thing .

Benjamin Winter was the son of the dressage trainer Sybille Winter. His two older siblings Marius and Laura are also active in sports.
