The 2013 European Eventing Championships took place from August 29th to September 1st, 2013 in the southern Swedish city of Malmö .

The 31st European Eventing Championships were held in Malmö . The first European championships were held in British badminton 60 years earlier .

In February 2011 the FEI announced that the 2013 European Eventing Championships would be held in Malmö. The Malmö City Horse Show , an international 3 * short eventing test (CIC 3 *), is held there every year, and the eventing World Cup finals took place twice as part of this event . The European Championships took place in Sweden for the first time.

Implementation, venue, media

The main sponsor of the European Championships in Malmö was the major British bank HSBC . Malmö was the last major event from the sponsorship agreement between HSBC and the FEI, which expired at the end of the year.

The venue for the event was Ribersborgsstranden , the beach area in the Malmö district of Ribersborg. The dressage and jumping competitions took place on two clay courts in the area of ​​the Uferstraße (Limhamnsvägen). The terrain was built on the green area between the quayside and the beach.

Before the European Championships, the topic of animal welfare moved into the limelight: Swedish animal welfare law is one of the strictest in the world and thus goes beyond the rules of the FEI. The local animal welfare law states that horses that are treated in any way are generally not allowed to take part in competitions. These regulations would have meant that eventing horses, for example, which excrete large amounts of electrolytes through their sweat , are not allowed to be supplied with electrolytes. Acupuncture , which is widespread in equestrian sports, would also have been forbidden. In order to resolve this issue, the Presidium of the Swedish Ministry of Agriculture and the FEI met to find compromises. The FEI initially set important equestrian events that are to take place in Sweden in the following years (European Pony Championships 2015, World Cup finals dressage / jumping 2016), with reservations.

On German television, ZDF broadcast the event every half hour on Saturday and Sunday. The FEI broadcast the tournament on its website for a fee.

Competitions

General

Traditionally there are two evaluations at the European Championships: the team and the individual evaluation. Both ratings are determined in the same tests, team riders also count for the individual rating. Since 2005, the European Championship has been held as a long test in a new format - dressage, cross-country, jumping - at CCI 3 * level.

Ten teams and other individual riders started in Malmö, so the field of participants comprised 61 riders. The participating nations were each allowed to send four team riders and two individual riders, each with one horse, to the European championships. As the host nation, Sweden was allowed to start six individual riders alongside the team riders.

Time schedule

The sporting program of the European Championships started on Thursday (August 29) with the first part of the dressage test. This continued on Friday.

The second partial test was the cross-country course, the core of the versatility. This is carried out on Saturday. The last partial test, the jumping competition, was on the program on Sunday. After this the new European champions were determined. The exams lasted from morning to afternoon.

Intermediate result according to the terrain

The German team riders made no mistakes in the area and thus secured the lead in the intermediate ranking. The Swedish team also showed a very good performance and held their second place. The team of Great Britain was weakened by the departure of Lucy Wiegersma and slipped to sixth place after 40 minus points from Pippa Funnell.
