Matt Howard (born January 23, 1989 in Connersville , Indiana ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, Howard became a professional in Europe, where he played in the German basketball league for the Württemberg first division clubs EnBW Ludwigsburg and ratiopharm ulm . For the latter team he was active in the basketball Bundesliga 2013/14 .

Career

College time (2007 to 2011)

Howard went to study at Butler University in the capital Indianapolis of his native US state in 2007 . There he played for the college team Bulldogs in the Horizon League of the NCAA . Right from the start he was a valuable support for the team, was named “Newcomer of the Year” of the Horizon League as a freshman and was named “ Conference Player of the Year” a year later . The Bulldogs won the championship tournament of the Horizon League three times in the four years with Howard, only in 2009 they lost the final against the Vikings of Cleveland State University . Howard was named Most Outstanding Player of the championship tournament in the Bulldogs' last two titles in 2010 and 2011 . In all of its four seasons, the Bulldogs qualified for the national NCAA finals . After the Bulldogs were eliminated early twice in a row, they reached the final of the final tournament in 2010 and 2011, although they were not placed in the regional groups of the finals among the top four teams. In 2010 they lost the final against the renowned Blue Devils of Duke University with two points difference and in 2011 against the Huskies of the University of Connecticut after half-time lead with 41:53.

Howard was able to excel in his college career through his combative use on the field to gain rebounds and also developed a throw from behind the three-point line . After initially not throwing a throw from such a distance in his first NCAA season, in his senior year he hit 40% of these throws out of almost four attempts per game, which is considered a good rate for this type of throw. In addition, he was characterized by strong nerves in game-critical throws. Howard received the "Elite 88 Award" (later Elite 89 Award) from Division I twice in 2010 and 2011 for the player who had the best academic performance at the highest athletic level of the NCAA. Howard, who grew up with nine siblings, did not do without his age-related rusted bicycle and used sports shoes during his college days, even though he had half a dozen new shoes, nor did he place undue emphasis on his other outward appearance and had a particular weakness for word games, which made him as a personality a popular topic in media reporting in addition to his above-average athletic and academic achievements.

Europe (since 2011)

After Howard, despite his achievements in the 2011 NBA draft, had not been selected by a team in the top-endowed professional league NBA , he started a professional career in Europe at the Greek top club Olympiacos from Piraeus . Here he could not assert himself and left the team in February 2012, before the team later won the highest title in European club basketball in addition to the Greek championship with the ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 . For the rest of the season, he joined the relegation-threatened Bundesliga club from Ludwigsburg in the 2011/12 basketball Bundesliga . After relegation with this team, Howard signed a contract with Chorale Basket from Roanne in the French LNB Pro A for the following season . Under coach Luka Pavićević , who had previously also worked in Germany, the team lost fifth in the main round in the play-offs for the championship in the first round against defending champion Élan Chalon . Howard then got a contract in Ulm with the German first division club ratiopharm for the 2013/14 basketball Bundesliga . After only one season he left Ulm again and joined Strasbourg IG .
