2011 NBA draft
The 2011 NBA Draft was conducted on June 23, 2011 at the Prudential Center of Newark , New Jersey . In two rounds, the 30 NBA teams were able to secure the rights to a total of 60 young players. However, since the league had imposed a " lockout " on July 1, 2011 and the 2011/12 season began late, the players could not immediately switch to the NBA. Some therefore signed contracts in other leagues.
The final draft order for positions 1 to 14 was determined by the draft lottery on May 17, 2011 . The 14 teams that had not qualified for the play-off round in the 2010/11 season took part in this weighted lottery and were placed in the reverse order of the regular season table. The draw was won by the Cleveland Cavaliers , who had acquired this pick from the Los Angeles Clippers , followed by the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Utah Jazz , whose pick came from the New Jersey Nets .
All players who wanted to register for the draft had to be born before the end of the calendar year 1992, regardless of their school leaving certificate. If they weren't an "international player," there had to be at least a year between their high school graduation and the start of the 2011-12 NBA season.
First in the draft, Kyrie Irving of Duke University was selected , ahead of Derrick Williams and Enes Kanter . The draft also set a record: six out of seven of the first players to be drafted were born outside the US , three of them in Europe .

- ↑ One day after the draft, rumors emerged that Ngombo had presented a forged passport. Ta n guy Ngombo, as his real name was, was born in 1984. That would have meant that he would not have been allowed to participate in the draft, with the result that the pick would have expired and Ngombo would have become a regular free agent . However, on June 27, 2011, the player swap between the Dallas Mavericks and the Portland Trail Blazers was confirmed by the league, implying that Ngombo's entry into the draft remained.
