Career
college
Derrick Williams decided after high school at the suggestion of Tim Floyd first for the college of the University of Southern California . However, due to a scandal, USC coach Floyd left the team before the college season. Then Williams also asked for clearance to move to another college. That clearance was granted, and shortly thereafter Williams accepted a University of Arizona scholarship . Williams already knew how to convince in his first season and was named All-American and Pac-10 Freshmen of the Year.
In his second season with the Wildcats, Williams improved again and led his team to win the championship in the Pac-10. For this achievement he was named Pac-10 Player of the Year . At the NCAA tournament, he led his team to the Elite Eight . However, the Wildcats lost 63:65 against eventual NCAA champions Connecticut . Even after the college season, Williams was honored with many awards. Many experts gave him a good chance to play in the NBA in the future; Williams made the decision to sign up for the NBA draft .
NBA
In the 2011 NBA Draft , Williams was selected second by the Minnesota Timberwolves . On February 28, he reached his career best with 27 points against the Los Angeles Clippers . He finished his rookie season with an average of 8.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 0.6 assists. Williams finished his second year with 12.0 points and 5.5 rebounds. He benefited above all from the frequent injuries of the nominal power forward Kevin Love , which gave him a lot of playing time. On December 9, 2013 Williams scored 31 points against the Dallas Mavericks and set a new career high.
On November 26, 2013 Williams was transferred to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Luc Mbah a Moute . Williams did not make the breakthrough with the Kings either and remained mediocre. In his two years in Sacramento, he scored 8.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
In the summer of 2015, he went without a contract and signed with the New York Knicks . A year later, Williams moved to the Miami Heat . At the beginning of February 2017 he was released from the Heat in favor of Okaro White . On February 9, 2017, he signed a ten-day contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers . After a second ten-day contract, he was committed by the Cavaliers for the rest of the season and reached the NBA final with these, but where they lost to the Golden State Warriors .
In December 2017, Williams moved to the Tianjin Gold Lions in the Chinese basketball league CBA . In 15 games, Williams came to 20.0 points and 6.6 rebounds on average.
In March 2018, Williams accepted an offer from the Los Angeles Lakers , who provided him with a ten-day contract. For the Californians Williams only played two games this season, in which he only came on short appearances.
At the beginning of October 2018, the forward moved to Bayern Munich in the basketball Bundesliga . By Bayern President Uli Hoeneß Williams was described as a "stroke of luck" for the Munich team. He won the German championship with FCB in the 2018/19 season, and Williams contributed an average of 11.4 points per game to this success in 37 Bundesliga games.
Williams left Munich after a year of play and was signed by the top Turkish team Fenerbahçe Istanbul in July 2019 . He played 15 league games for the team and scored 10.9 points per encounter. In summer 2020 he was signed by the Valencia Basket Club .
