The Chinese Basketball Association ( CBA ; Chinese  中国 男子 篮球 职业 联赛 , Pinyin Zhōngguó Nánzǐ Lánqiú Zhíyè Liánsài ) is the highest professional basketball league in China , founded in 1995. In addition to the CBA, there is also a league for women, the WCBA. The CBA is not to be confused with the National Basketball League (formerly the Chinese Basketball League), which is only a minor league of the CBA.

Some CBA players, such as Yao Ming , Wang Zhizhi , Yi Jianlian , Sun Yue and Mengke Bateer , then made their way into the North American professional league National Basketball Association (NBA).

For some years now, former, mostly veteran NBA professionals have also played in the CBA. The best known are Stephon Marbury , Carlos Boozer , Steve Francis , Gilbert Arenas , Tracy McGrady , Al Harrington , Metta World Peace , Kenyon Martin , Michael Beasley , Aaron Brooks , Andray Blatche , Bonzi Wells and JR Smith . For the CBA there is a limit of foreign players for each team.

background

The league began playing in 1995 and should therefore not be confused with the "Chinese Basketball Association" of the same name, which was founded in 1956, but whose game operations were discontinued in 1974. Basketball in the People's Republic of China is regulated by the Chinese Basketball Management Center (国家 体育 总局 篮球 管理 中心 or 体 总 篮球 管理 中心 or 篮管中心), or CBMC for short.
