Metta Sandiford-Artest (* 13. November 1979 in Queens , New York as Ronald William Artest Jr. ), formerly known under the name Ron Artest and Metta World Peace , is a former American professional basketball player who most of his professional career in 1999 until 2017 was active in the NBA .

Artest has long been considered one of the best defenders of the NBA and was after the 2003-04 season to the NBA Defensive Player of the Year chosen.

Career

Artest was selected 16th in the 1999 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls in 1999 . For his achievements in his first year as a professional, he was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2000 . This was followed by positions with the Indiana Pacers , Sacramento Kings , Houston Rockets , New York Knicks and - interrupted by trips to the Chinese and Italian leagues - the Los Angeles Lakers .

Artest repeatedly attracted attention with negative headlines. In the 2004/05 season he lost control during a game at the Detroit Pistons and hit several spectators after being provoked and thrown with a mug of beer. As a result, Artest had to serve a record suspension of 73 games (rest of the 2004/05 season and play-offs ). At the beginning of the 2005/06 season he caused the next scandal by requesting a trade with another team. He was then suspended from his club.

In January 2005, the Pacers finally agreed on an exchange with the Sacramento Kings , and Artest was sent to Sacramento for three-time All-Star Peja Stojaković .

After the end of the 2008 season , he was transferred from Sacramento to the Houston Rockets . In return, the Kings scored rookie Donté Greene , Bobby Jackson and a future first-round pick for 2009.

Artest with the Sacramento Kings

In July 2009 Artest signed a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent . With the Lakers he won the 2010 NBA championship.

On April 24, 2012, Artest was suspended for seven games after punching James Harden in the head with his left elbow. In July 2013, his contract with the Lakers was terminated by drawing the "amnesty clause".

In September 2015, Artest signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

In 2017 he ended his playing career and switched to the coaching staff of the Los Angeles Lakers' farm team , the South Bay Lakers , who are active in the NBA G-League . He took over a season the role of "player development coach" ( player development coach ).
