Sidney A. Moncrief (born September 21, 1957 in Little Rock , Arkansas ) was active from 1979 to 1991 in the American professional basketball league NBA . He was one of the best defenders in the league, but never made it to the NBA Finals. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 2019 .

Career

Moncrief played for the Milwaukee Bucks from 1979 to 1989 . With Moncrief, the Bucks, who had a top team in the early 1970s and suffered a crash in the middle of the decade, found their strength again. Moncrief was one of the best all-rounders in the league and formed a strong duo with Marques Johnson that even made it into the Eastern Conference final in 1984. Especially because of his excellent defense, the 1.93 meter tall guard was feared by his opponents, in 1983 and 1984 he was voted the best defender in the league . Between 1981 and 1985 he was invited to the NBA All-Star Game five times . For seven seasons in a row he led his Milwaukee Bucks to 50 or more wins in the regular season, but in the play-offs they always failed because of the Philadelphia 76ers or the Boston Celtics .

After an unsuccessful season with the Atlanta Hawks , Moncrief ended his professional career in 1991. The Bucks withdrew their # 4 jersey after Moncrief's retirement. In 2018 he was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as a player.

Coaching

After his career, Moncrief worked as a coach. 1999-2000 he was in charge of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock , 2006-2007 he was coach in the D-League with the Fort Worth Flyers . In 2011 he was briefly employed as an assistant coach at the Milwaukee Bucks.
