Charles Henry "Chuck" Cooper (born September 29, 1926 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , † February 5, 1984 ibid) was an American basketball player . He was posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 2019 .

Career

Cooper was the first African American player in NBA history to be elected by a club in the 1950 NBA Draft .

After playing for Westinghouse High School in Pittsburgh and the athletics departments of Duquesne University (NCAA) and West Virginia State College (CIAA) until 1950 , Red Auerbach brought him to the Boston Celtics . He also played in the off-season for the Harlem Globetrotters and later for the Harlem Magicians . After four years in Boston, Cooper joined the Milwaukee Hawks before starting his career with the Ft. Wayne Pistons finished.

During his NBA career, Cooper came to a total of 409 missions, scored 2,725 points and collected 2,439 rebounds , which means an average of 6.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
