Teresa Gaye Weatherspoon (born December 8, 1965 in Pineland , Texas , United States ) is a former professional basketball player. She played for the New York Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks in the Women's National Basketball Association as a point guard . Since 2009 she has been the head coach of the Lady Techsters at Louisiana Tech University .
Weatherspoon was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019 .
Career as a player
college
Weatherspoon played for the Lady Techsters , Louisiana Tech University's NCAA women's basketball team . In 1988 she won the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship with the Lady Techsters .
WNBA (1997 to 2004)
Teresa Weatherspoon was selected in 1997 in the first WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty as the tenth player overall. In the 1997 and 1998 seasons , she was voted Defensive Player of the Year . Weatherspoon could not only celebrate individual successes, she reached the WNBA final four times with the New York Liberty, where she failed three times with the Liberty at the Houston Comets and once at the Los Angeles Sparks . After the 2003 season, the New York Liberty did not renew their contract, so they signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Sparks. At the end of the 2004 season , Weatherspoon announced her retirement from competitive sports at the age of 39.
She was honored for her achievements in the WNBA 2006 in the election of the WNBA All-Decade Team . Although she was not one of the ten players directly elected to the team, she was honored with the addition of an “Honorable Mention” along with four other players. For her achievements in the WNBA on the 15th anniversary of the league in 2011, she was chosen among the WNBA's Top 15 Players of All Time .
Europe (1993 to 1997)
For several years she was also active for clubs in Russia and Italy.
International (1988 to 1992)
Weatherspoon won the gold medal with the US women's basketball team at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . She also won the bronze medal with the US women's basketball team at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona .
Career as a trainer (since 2007)
In 2007, Weatherspoon was the head coach of the Westchester Phantoms . In April 2008, she joined the Lady Techsters coaching staff at Louisiana Tech University . In February 2009 she took over the post of head coach on an interim basis. On April 2, she was finally named the team's official head coach.

Teresa Weatherspoon is the great cousin of American football player Sean Weatherspoon .
