Season Notes
- The Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets and Cleveland Cavaliers introduced new team jerseys.
- Before the start of the regular season , Karl Malone and Gary Payton joined the Los Angeles Lakers. They took huge wage cuts to win the NBA title with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal . The title hunt failed when the Lakers lost 4-1 in the NBA final to the Detroit Pistons .
- The stars of the 2003 Draft Class played their first season: LeBron James (1st pick), Carmelo Anthony (3rd pick), Chris Bosh (4th pick) and Dwyane Wade (5th pick) made their debut. Anthony and Wade led their teams into the play-offs , in which Wade was only eliminated in the second round against the Indiana Pacers .
- The Houston Rockets played their first game at the Toyota Center .
- The NBA All-Star Game took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles . The west won 136-132. Lakers Center Shaquille O'Neal was named an All-Star Game MVP.
- The Minnesota Timberwolves had the best odds in the Western Conference with their "Big Three" Kevin Garnett , Latrell Sprewell and Sam Cassell . The Timberwolves, who had never won a playoff series by then, ultimately won two and only failed in the Western Conference final against the Lakers.
