Theophalus Curtis Ratliff (born April 17, 1973 in Demopolis , Alabama ) is a retired American basketball player . He played primarily in the position of a center and was best known for his strength in defense .
Career
After Ratliff attended high school in his native Demopolis , he spent his college days at the University of Wyoming . From there he moved to the NBA in 1995 , where he was selected in the draft in 18th place by the Detroit Pistons .
He played in Detroit for 2½ years, but Ratliff never got over the role of a banker with the Pistons. He was transferred to the Philadelphia 76ers during the 1997/98 season , where he experienced his most successful athletic period.
He was a member of the All-Defensive Second Team in 1999 and managed to be selected as the starter of the 2001 NBA All-Star Game. He was also successful with his team and moved into the NBA Finals , led by the Most Valuable Player of the season, Allen Iverson . There they were defeated, however, without Ratliff, who was injured, the Los Angeles Lakers in 1: 4 games.
After the season he was transferred to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Dikembe Mutombo . While he continued to struggle with injuries in the first year, he managed to establish himself in the starting five . He led the league in blocks in the 2003/04 season and was re-elected to the all-defensive second team. After this season, Ratliff decided to switch again and signed for three years with the Portland Trail Blazers . There, however, he was unable to build on the performances of previous years, which was also due to many injuries, and soon lost his place in the starting lineup.
After three years in Portland, in which there was no play-off, he changed teams several times, so that between 2007 and 2010 he played for Boston , Minnesota , San Antonio and Charlotte .
Even the intermittent return to his first club, the Detroit Pistons, did not help bring him to his expected role on the team. The next move to Philadelphia shortly afterwards brought no lasting improvement either. Although he played most of the games during this phase with 46 games, he was only used by the bench and only got 1.9 points per game. In the end, after seven stations in four years, he signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers on July 22, 2010, where he was used in 10 games during the 2010/11 season . After the season he ended his career.
