Carmelo Kyam Anthony (born May 29, 1984 in New York City , New York ) is an American basketball player currently under contract with the Portland Trail Blazers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Anthony was drafted third by the Denver Nuggets in 2003 and played there for eight years before moving to the New York Knickerbockers in 2011 .
During his time with the Nuggets and Knicks, he was elected ten times to the NBA All-Star and six times to the All-NBA team . In addition, he led the league in 2013 in points scored and set a new Knicks record in January 2014 with 62 points in one game. With the US national team , he also won gold medals three times at the Olympic Games ( 2008 , 2012 , 2016 ).
Career
college
Carmelo Anthony was the youngest of four children born to a Puerto Rican immigrant and African American in Red Hook in New York City District Brooklyn born. His father died when Anthony was two years old. He grew up in Baltimore in the US state of Maryland on. There he attended the private school Towson Catholic High School thanks to a sports scholarship .
In his senior year , he moved to the Oak Hill Academy Basketball Boarding School in Mouth of Wilson , Virginia . In 2002 he accepted a scholarship from Syracuse University in Syracuse , New York, which he led to the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship the following season . Anthony's freshman year with the Syracuse Orangemen is considered one of the best in NCAA history and has been honored with an award. Syracuse University withdrew jersey number 15 in Anthony's honor and has not awarded it since.
Denver Nuggets (2003-2011)
Anthony was selected third in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets . The 2.03 meter tall forward scored the most points of all league newbies in the 2003/04 season and led the Denver Nuggets, who were the worst team in the league a year earlier, in the play-offs . There they failed in the first round to the Minnesota Timberwolves around MVP Kevin Garnett . After his notable debut season, Anthony finished second to LeBron James in the best league newcomer poll, and was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie First Team . In his sophomore year he was awarded the MVP of the Rookie Challenge , a game between NBA players in their first and sophomore years as a professional that is played as part of the annual NBA All-Star Weekend .
In the 2006/07 season he got off to a strong start, but was suspended on December 16, 2006 as the main participant in a dispute between several players in the game against the New York Knicks because of a punch for 15 games. His first game after suspension was on January 22, 2007 against the Memphis Grizzlies . After his suspension, he found his previous form and finished the season as the second best points collector in the league behind Kobe Bryant (28.9 points per game), making him one of the best players in the NBA. In addition to Allen Iverson , Anthony was the most valuable player of the Denver Nuggets and the captain of the team in the 2007/2008 NBA season . On December 10, 2008, Anthony set a record from George Gervin when he scored 33 points in a single quarter against the Minnesota Timberwolves .
As long as he played at Denver, this reached the play-offs every year , but he did not manage to carry his Denver Nuggets beyond the first round until the 2008/09 season . This season he defeated the "curse", however, and led the Denver Nuggets with newcomer Chauncey Billups (who came in exchange for Allen Iverson from the Detroit Pistons to the Nuggets) at his side until the final of the Western Conference. The Los Angeles Lakers turned out to be too strong an opponent. The following season, the Nuggets won 53 regular season games and faced the Utah Jazz in the first round of the playoffs . Anthony scored his playoff career best of 42 points in the first game of the series, but the Nuggets were ultimately defeated by Jazz after six games - a major setback after reaching the Conference finals the year before.
The 2010/1 1 NBA season started very well for Anthony. On November 15, 2010, he scored 20 points and a career high of 22 rebounds in a game against the Phoenix Suns , his first 20-20 game.
New York Knicks (from 2011 to 2017)
On February 22, 2011, Anthony was awarded a first round pick , two second round picks and three million US dollars, along with Chauncey Billups , Anthony Carter , Shelden Williams and Renaldo Balkman in exchange for Raymond Felton , Danilo Gallinari , Wilson Chandler , Timofey Mozgov given to the New York Knicks . There he extended his contract, which ended in 2011, by three years, which guaranteed him a total salary of 65 million US dollars. Anthony was able to help his new team in his debut with 27 points and 10 rebounds to a 114: 108 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks .
With Anthony the Knicks reached 2011 for the first time in seven years the play-offs . Nevertheless, the change is controversial among supporters of the Knicks, as the team mainly gave up younger players without so far, as hoped, become one of the favorites for the championship.
In the first two games of the season he scored a total of 57 points (30 against Miami , 27 against the 76ers ). Richie Guerin could also reach 57 points against the Chicago Zephyrs and the Lakers in 1962 . 1970 Willis Reed get 58 points against the Celtics and the Cincinnati Royals . Patrick Ewing netted 76 points in 1993 against the Celtics and the Cavaliers . All of these games were won.
He was able to achieve a new franchise record in the first four home games of the 2012/13 season : each time he scored at least 25 points for the Knicks (30, 27, 31 and 26). Anthony was this season's most successful scorer with an average of 28.8 points. With the Knicks he reached the second playoff round for the first time.
On January 24, 2014 Anthony scored a new franchise record with 62 points at the home game at Madison Square Garden . Despite a weak season with the Knicks, Anthony was nominated for the 2015 NBA All-Star Game as a starter. After the All-Star Game, it was revealed that Anthony will have knee surgery and will be out for the rest of the season. The following season Anthony was nominated as a starter. For the playoffs it was not enough for him and the Knicks, however, again. In 2017, Anthony was not invited directly to the All-Star Game. Only after an injury to Kevin Love made it possible for him to take part in the All-Star Game for the tenth time in his career.
Oklahoma City (from 2017 to 2018)
Anthony moved from the New York Knicks for Enes Kanter , Doug McDermott and a Chicago Bulls second round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder in September 2017 . There he should form a new management trio with MVP Russell Westbrook and Paul George, who had also changed . To make the change possible, Anthony waived the application of a clause that would have enabled him to prevent a change through a veto. During the season, Anthony completed his 1,000th NBA game. In all of these games he was in the starting five. Alongside Patrick Ewing, he was only the second player in the history of the NBA to make the first 1000 games of his career in the starting five. Anthony moved at the end of the season in return for Dennis Schröder to the Atlanta Hawks , but did not complete a game for them and dissolved his contract.
Houston Rockets (from 2018 to 2019)
For the 2018/19 season, Anthony moved to the Houston Rockets and from there, after completing ten games, to the Chicago Bulls in January 2019 . However, his contract was terminated in early February without having booked a deployment for Chicago.
Portland Trail Blazers (from 2019)
A few game days after the start of the 2019/20 season, the Portland Trail Blazers announced they had signed Anthony for a year. He was awarded a one-year contract with a salary of $ 2.15 million. He made his debut on November 19 against the New Orleans Pelicans and was in the starting line-up, having not played an NBA encounter since November 2018. On January 18, 2020 in the game against the Dallas Mavericks, Anthony scored his 26,000th career point with a free throw in the first quarter, making him one of 18 players who have ever achieved this.
National team
With the US national basketball team , Anthony won the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics . Since summer 2006 he has been co-captain of the national team. In the World Cup tournament he reached his best mark with 35 points against Italy . Anthony was the only American to be appointed to the All Tournament Team at this tournament .
After he won his first national team title in 2007 with the American Championship , he became Olympic champion in Beijing the following year . At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Anthony took gold a second time with the national basketball team as the team defended their title. He sets a new point record in summer games by scoring 37 points against Nigeria within a good 14 minutes on the floor.
Others
In addition to sports, Anthony also takes on smaller roles in television productions. It was already featured as a guest in the American edition of Sesame Street . He also had guest roles in the series Nurse Jackie , Sons of Anarchy and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit .
With an annual salary of € 16.6 million (US $ 21.6 million), Anthony ranked second among the NBA's top earners in 2012.
