The 2015/16 NBA season marked the 70th season of the National Basketball Association . Champions were the Cleveland Cavaliers for the first time , who were able to prevail in the final against the defending champions Golden State Warriors .
The regular season began on October 27, 2015 at the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls , with the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers . A few hours later, the game between the Golden State Warriors , the current champions, and the New Orleans Pelicans followed . On December 25th, Christmas Day , five games were scheduled, including a replay of the previous season's finals with the Cleveland Cavaliers against the Golden State Warriors . The All-Star Game took place on February 14, 2016 at the Air Canada Center in Toronto . The regular season ended on April 13, 2016, after which the playoffs were held from April 16, 2016 .
Off-season
Change of ownership
- The Atlanta Hawks were bought by a group of investors led by billionaire Antony Ressler and former NBA all-star Grant Hill . They were already awarded the contract in April 2015. The team was sold for $ 850 million.
Career ends
- Shawn Marion retired on June 18, 2015 after losing the final with the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Golden State Warriors .
- Andrei Kirilenko , who last played in Russia, initially ruled out a comeback in the NBA and finally ended his career on June 23, 2015.
- Kenyon Martin , former first pick and NBA All-Star , announced on July 2, 2015 that he would not be returning to the court.
- The first pick of the NBA Draft 1999 Elton Brand from the Atlanta Hawks ended his career after 16 years; this was announced by the former All-Star Power Forward on August 11, 2015. However, in early January 2016, Brand was signed by his old club, the Philadelphia 76ers . However, he did not initially play, but was primarily brought in as a "mentor" for the young Sixers team. Later in the season, however, he also came to active use, which ended his retirement.
- Jason Richardson of the Atlanta Hawks surprisingly ended his career after 14 seasons. Richardson had only signed a one-year contract with the Hawks in August. One of his greatest successes is winning the slam dunk contest twice as part of the NBA All-Star Game .
Change of coach
- The Chicago Bulls parted ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau . His successor will be Fred Hoiberg , who played for the Bulls between 1999 and 2003 and last coached the Iowa State Cyclones.
- The Oklahoma City Thunder also parted ways with their head coach Scott Brooks . Billy Donovan , who had previously led the Florida Gators to two NCAA championships, was named as his successor.
- Alvin Gentry succeeds Monty Williams as head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans . Gentry, who won the championship with the Golden State Warriors as Steve Kerr's assistant coach last season , has coached the Miami Heat , Detroit Pistons , Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns .
- Scott Skiles has been named Orlando Magic's new head coach. Skiles had previously trained the Phoenix Suns , Milwaukee Bucks, and Chicago Bulls .
- The Denver Nuggets committed Michael Malone as the new head coach. Malone was sacked by the Sacramento Kings last season and replaced by George Karl .
- The Minnesota Timberwolves announced on October 24th that their head coach Flip Saunders would also miss the regular season after the preseason due to his cancer. Flip Saunders passed away a day later at the age of 60. His successor was his previous assistant coach Sam Mitchell .
NBA draft
The 2015 NBA Draft took place on June 25, 2015 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn , New York . Before the start of the draft, the two centers Jahlil Okafor and Karl-Anthony Towns were the top favorites for the first pick .
Player change
Club changes usually begin with the trade phase, in which the players' contracts are exchanged between the teams. On July 1, 2015, the free agency phase began, during which players whose contracts had expired or had not been renewed could negotiate with the teams. They could either sign a new contract with their current club or sign a contract with another team from July 9, 2015. The most discussed player changes are:
- LaMarcus Aldridge moved after nine years from the Portland Trail Blazers to his Texan homeland to the San Antonio Spurs .
- Tyson Chandler left the Dallas Mavericks after just a year and joined the Phoenix Suns .
- Also Monta Ellis left the Mavericks and switched to the Indiana Pacers .
- Point Guard Rajon Rondo ended his interlude with the Mavericks after just six months to join the Sacramento Kings .
- Free Agent Greg Monroe left the Pistons for the Milwaukee Bucks .
Contract extensions and renewals
The most discussed contract extensions in the 2015 off-season were:
- LeBron James signed a new two-year contract with player option in the sophomore year with the Cleveland Cavaliers after he had previously withdrawn from his contract.
- DeAndre Jordan's contract renewal with the Los Angeles Clippers caused a lot of stir, as the center initially gave the Dallas Mavericks an oral promise during its free agency , but was still courted by the Clippers and finally signed a new contract with the Clippers. allegedly without informing the Mavericks about his plan.
- Kevin Love , who was also out of his contract, stayed with the Cleveland Cavaliers and signed a new five-year deal.
- Tim Duncan extended his expired contract with the San Antonio Spurs by two years.
- Power forward Anthony Davis extended his contract with the New Orleans Pelicans, which expired in 2016, by five years.
- All-Star Point Guard Damian Lillard also prematurely extended his contract with the Portland Trail Blazers for five years until 2021.
- Point Guard Reggie Jackson of the Detroit Pistons signed a new five-year deal worth $ 80 million.
- The Memphis Grizzlies and their center Marc Gasol agreed on a new five-year contract worth $ 110 million.

Western Conference
With the win against the Denver Nuggets on November 22nd, their 15th of the current season, the reigning champions Golden State Warriors set the NBA record for most wins at the beginning of the season. They were trained by interim trainer Luke Walton during this series as their head coach Steve Kerr was recovering from a back surgery. On December 12, the Milwaukee Bucks traded the Warriors in their 25th game, the first defeat of the season. In the game against the New York Knicks on December 16, Ricky Rubio came very close to a quadruple double - he finished the game with 9 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists and 8 steals. Halfway through the season, two teams - the Warriors and the San Antonio Spurs - had at least 35 wins each. It was the first time in league history that two teams had so many wins in their first 41 games. In the final rematch on Martin Luther King Day between the Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers , the reigning champions in Cleveland won surprisingly clearly with 132: 98. It was the biggest home defeat in LeBron James ' career. On January 25, 2016 there was the first meeting of the season between the two "historically good" teams of the Warriors and the Spurs . The Warriors won against the Spurs without Tim Duncan surprisingly clearly with 120: 90. On the same day, DeMarcus Cousins threw 56 points in the game against the Charlotte Hornets , which was the best single result of the season. A month later, Cousins' result was beaten by Anthony Davis , who reached 59 points and 20 rebounds in the game against the Detroit Pistons . By the All-Star-Break in mid-February, the situation in the table was relatively clear: with the Warriors, Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder , three teams took the top positions by a clear margin, while the disappointing Houston Rockets and the surprise teams from Utah and Portland competed to the play-offs delivered. On February 27, the Warriors managed to qualify for the play-offs - they won an extra game against the Thunder with 121-118, while the ninth-placed Rockets lost to the Spurs on the same evening. Stephen Curry scored 12 threes (NBA record) in the game. On March 19, the Spurs retaliated for their loss to the Warriors in January and won 87:79. This means that the two teams have the most regular season home wins in a row with Warriors 50 and Spurs 45 (as of March 23) . However, the Spurs lost two days later in Charlotte in a game in which they lost a 23 lead, which was Gregg Popovich's negative record. The home series of the Warriors ended on April 1 after 54 wins in a row with a loss to the Boston Celtics . The Spurs streak lasted until the two teams met again - on April 10, the Warriors won in San Antonio with 92:86, it was the Spurs' first home defeat in their 40th game of the season. At the same time the Warriors so set the record for the Chicago Bulls of the season 95/96 one for most victories (72). On the last day of the game, the Warriors managed to set a new record with a win against the Memphis Grizzlies with 73 regular season wins. On the same day, Kobe Bryant threw 60 points in the last game of his career against the Utah Jazz .
Eastern Conference
After they recorded 17 defeats in a row at the beginning of the 2014/15 season , the Philadelphia 76ers started the new season with 18 defeats. Having lost their last 10 games at the end of last season, the negative streak was de facto 28 games. It was only in their 19th game that the Sixers were able to successfully prevail against the Los Angeles Lakers . For a long time, the table situation in the Eastern Conference was very balanced - although the Cleveland Cavaliers and then the Toronto Raptors settled quite quickly from the other teams, but in places 3-11 there were constant rotations. There were both positive and negative surprise teams, especially the Boston Celtics , which took 3rd place in the conference for a long time, and the Milwaukee Bucks , which disappointed especially in the first half of the season.
Change of coach
- On November 18, the Houston Rockets parted ways with head coach Kevin McHale . His successor will temporarily be Assistant Coach JB Bickerstaff.
- On January 10, 2016, the Brooklyn Nets split from head coach Lionel Hollins .
- On January 22, 2016, the Cleveland Cavaliers fired head coach David Blatt . His successor was his previous assistant coach Tyronn Lue .
- On January 31st, Jeff Hornacek was released from the Phoenix Suns . His previous assistant Earl Watson was appointed as his successor (as interim trainer).
- On February 8th, Derek Fisher was released from the New York Knicks . His previous assistant Kurt Rambis has been appointed interim trainer .

Trivia
Resignations
- On November 29, 2015, Kobe Bryant announced that he would end his career after the 2015/16 season.
Milestones
- LeBron James became the second player after Oscar Robertson , who is in the top 25 lists for most career points and assistants.
- Chris Paul became the 15th player to boast more than 7,000 career assists. He also has the third best career average (9.9 assists per game), surpassed only by Magic Johnson and John Stockton .
- On December 11th, Kevin Garnett overtook Karl Malone in a game against the Denver Nuggets and is now the best defensive rebounder in NBA history. However, defensive rebounds have only been recorded statistically since the 1973/74 season, so that the two best rebounders in league history, Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell , were only recorded in these statistics for part of their careers.
- Also on December 11th, Draymond Green was the 9th player to score five-by-five. In the Warriors' guest appearance at the Celtics , Green collected 24 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocks.
- With the win against Utah Jazz on December 14th, Gregg Popovich overtook Rick Adelman and moved up to eighth place on the list of NBA coaches with the most career wins.
- On December 23, Dirk Nowitzki overtook NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal in the NBA's all-time scoring list when his Dallas Mavericks played against the Brooklyn Nets . In front of the new number 6 Nowitzki are only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar , Karl Malone , Kobe Bryant , Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain .
- In the 142: 119 victory of his Kings over the Phoenix Suns on January 2, 2016, George Karl and Phil Jackson were right on the list of NBA coaches with the most career wins. At the time, they were jointly fifth on the list with 1,155 wins each.
- In the game against the Houston Rockets on January 2, 2016, Tim Duncan did not score a single point for the first time in his career. It was his 1360th NBA game. It is the longest such streak in league history.
- On January 29, 2016, in the game against Detroit Pistons , LeBron James became the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 26,000 career point mark.
- On February 25, 2016 Stephen Curry scored a three-point throw in the 128th game in a row. He set a new NBA record for most consecutive games with at least one successful three-point throw and replaced Kyle Korver , who was able to achieve a three in 127 consecutive games. Two days later, Curry set the NBA record for the most three-pointers in a game (12) in the game against the Thunder and broke his own record for the most three-pointers in a season (288 after the Thunder game).
- Also on February 27th, Tim Duncan became the fifth player in league history with at least 3,000 career blocks and he also overtook Karl Malone in the list of the most career rebounds and is now in 6th place.
- On April 13, 2016, the Golden State Warriors ended the regular season with a new NBA record of 73 (of 82) games won after a 125:10 win over the Memphis Grizzlies . The previous record was held by the Chicago Bulls with 72 wins from the 1995/96 season . When they beat the San Antonio Spurs , who previously set the record in the game, they also caused the Spurs their first and only home defeat of the season after they had previously remained unbeaten at home 39 times.
