Derek Lamar Fisher (born August 9, 1974 in Little Rock , Arkansas ) is a retired American basketball player and current coach. The 1.85 meter tall Fisher played during his active period from 1996 to 2014 in the NBA at the position of the point guards , most of that time in the Los Angeles Lakers . During his time with the Lakers, Fisher won the NBA championship five times. He is also the all-time leader in NBA playoff games, with 259.

From June 2014 to February 2016, Fisher was Head Coach of the New York Knicks .

Career

As a player

Fisher attended the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) since 1992 , where he graduated in 1996. During his four years of college , Fisher averaged 12.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for the UALR Trojans .

In the 1996 NBA draft he was selected in the first round in 24th place by the Los Angeles Lakers , where he completed his first eight seasons alongside star players Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant and won the NBA championship three times ( 2000 , 2001 , 2002 ). What is most memorable is a 2-point throw by which Fisher secured a 74-73 win over the San Antonio Spurs 0.4 seconds before the final siren for the L. A. Lakers in the fifth game of the semifinals of the Western Conference of the 2003/04 season . The validity of the hit was only recognized through video evidence. After that game, Derek Fisher was named "The Fish that saved L.A." Ultimately, the Lakers moved back to the NBA Finals, but they clearly lost as big favorites in five games against the Detroit Pistons .

Fisher as a player for the Lakers

After that season, Fisher left the Lakers and played two seasons for the Golden State Warriors . In 2006 he then signed a four-year deal with the Utah Jazz . However, Fisher only played one season for the jazz. Since his daughter became critically ill and was being treated in Los Angeles , the point guard returned to the Lakers, where he immediately returned to an important role in the team. As a development player, he pulled the team again in 2008 , the NBA finals, but they were lost to the Boston Celtics 2-4.

Also in 2009 the Lakers reached the NBA Finals and this time they clearly won 4-1 against Orlando Magic . Fisher played a major role in the Lakers' success, as he saved his team in overtime with a 3-point throw in the fourth game. This success could be repeated in 2010 , with which Fisher brought in his fifth and to date last championship.

In March 2012 Fisher was transferred to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Jordan Hill and a first round pick , for which he did not play a game, however, as his contract was immediately terminated. As a free agent , Fisher instead signed a contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder , with whom he also moved into the 2012 NBA finals, which were clearly lost in five games against the Miami Heat . After that, Fisher ended his active career for the time being.

On November 29, 2012, however, he was signed by the Dallas Mavericks , who reacted to the mixed season performance up to then after the departure of their regular builder Jason Kidd and the injury-related loss of their star player Dirk Nowitzki .

On December 23, 2012, Fisher was released at his request so he could spend time with his family.

The following year he signed a new contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder , where he played a total of one season.

As a trainer

On June 10, 2014, the New York Knicks hired Fisher as their new head coach. On February 8, 2016, the Knicks parted company after nine losses in ten games from Derek Fisher.

Others

Fisher was the president of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) from 2006 to 2013 .
