The 2011-12 NBA season marked the National Basketball Association's 66th season . The regular season began on December 25, 2011 and ended on schedule on April 26, 2012. This is followed by the NBA playoffs from April 28, 2012, which ended on June 22 with the last game of the 2012 NBA Finals.
Lockout
On July 1, 2011, the collective agreement concluded in 2005 between club owners and the NBPA players' union expired . Both parties could not agree on a new contract. One of the most important strike points was the division of income between players and owners, with players receiving 57 percent of the income so far. Furthermore, the owners wanted to enforce a fixed salary limit called a hard cap instead of the current soft cap.
The negotiations did not lead to any result. This was the fourth lockout in the history of the NBA, with the number of season games had to be reduced for the second time after the 1998/99 season . After a large number of failed negotiations, the season was about to be canceled. On November 25th, the players' union and representatives of the owners agreed on a new contract. After votes on both sides, the new contract was approved on December 8th, so the lockout officially ended after 161 days. The season started on December 25th with three encounters between the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics , the Dallas Mavericks against the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers against the Chicago Bulls .
The new collective agreement has a term of ten years, with both contracting parties having the right to terminate after six years. The players only receive 51.15 percent of the income in the first year, the distribution from the second season depends on the development of the income. The luxury tax for exceeding the upper salary limit will rise more sharply from the 2012/13 season for high or regular excesses in order to achieve more discipline in adhering to the salary limit. In addition, teams across the border have fewer exceptions to signing players. Overall, player salaries will increase a little more slowly than before over the course of a career.
As a result of the lockout, the season was cut from 82 to 66 games. Above all, the number of matches against teams from the other conference was reduced. The schedule has also been tightened so that teams have to play more often on two consecutive days and up to three times on three consecutive days.
Important club changes
Before the start of the season
- Chris Paul is moving from the New Orleans Hornets to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Chris Kaman and Eric Gordon . The Los Angeles Lakers had previously reached an agreement with the Hornets and the Houston Rockets to sign Chris Paul for further transfers. This agreement was vetoed by the NBA, which owned the Hornets from December 2010 to June 2012.
Season milestones
- On February 6, 2012, Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers scored 5:08 before the end of the second quarter in the game against the Philadelphia 76ers his points 23 and 24. After the successful throw, he ousted Shaquille O'Neal in the NBA All Time scoring list from fifth place.
- Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics ousted Larry Bird to third place on the Boston All Time Scoring list on February 7, 2012 after a successfully converted three-point throw against the Charlotte Bobcats . Bird scored 21,791 points. Only John Havlicek is still ahead of Pierce with 26,395.
- The Charlotte Bobcats ended the season with a 10.6% win. This was the worst record for an NBA team ever.
All-Star Game
The All-Star Game took place on February 26, 2012 as part of the All-Star Weekend at the Amway Center in Orlando .
