Brandon Emmanuel Knight (born December 2, 1991 in Fort Lauderdale , Florida ) is an American basketball player who is currently under contract with the Detroit Pistons in the NBA . As a combo guard , he can play both the position of point guard and shooting guard .
High school
Brandon Knight was considered one of the most gifted high school basketball players in the country. He was twice named Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year while in high school at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale . He is only the third player after LeBron James (2002 and 2003) and Greg Oden (2005 and 2006) to succeed.
For his accomplishments, he was named to the 2010 annual McDonald's All American Game, a selection of the best high school basketball players in the country. In the same year he also played at the Nike Hoop Summit in Portland and the Jordan Brand Classic in New York .
college
After his high school career, Knight decided to play for the University of Kentucky under Head Coach John Calipari . He succeeded John Wall , who moved to the NBA in the same year , on the position of point guard . Knight had a good freshman season, leading his team to the Final Four of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship tournament. There Kentucky was defeated by Kemba Walker's team from the University of Connecticut . After leaving, Brandon Knight said he would join the NBA after a year of college.
NBA
Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks (2011-2015)
In the 2011 NBA draft , Knight was considered one of the five best players of the year. However, it was passed to position 8 and selected by the Detroit Pistons . Knight established himself in his first year as a starting point guard in Detroit, scoring 12.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 32.3 minutes . For these services he was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie First Team . On July 31, 2013, he was transferred to the Milwaukee Bucks along with Viacheslav Kravtsov and Khris Middleton in exchange for Brandon Jennings . At the Bucks he immediately took on the role of starting point guard. In 56 games Knight achieved career highs with 17.4 points, 4.9 assists and 3.4 rebounds.
Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers (From 2015 to 2020)
In February 2015, Knight was traded to the Phoenix Suns just before the transfer deadline . There he replaces Goran Dragic, who has switched to the Miami Heat . With the Suns he injured his ankle and was out for the rest of the season. So he completed only 11 season games for the Suns, in which Knight came to 13.4 points. Knight also struggled with injuries in the 2015-16 season. Still, he played a very good season. He succeeded on November 16, 2015 against the Los Angeles Lakers , his first triple double . In the Suns 120-101 victory, Knight scored 30 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds. With four steals , Knight was also only the fourth player in the NBA since 1974 to score a triple double with 30 points, 15 assists, 10 rebounds and 4 steals and the second youngest after Magic Johnson . Just days later, Knight set a career record with 38 points in a 114-107 win over the Denver Nuggets . In April Knight suffered an adductor injury, which meant he was out for the remainder of the season. Until then, Knight had 19.6 points per game in 52 games this season, after Eric Bledsoe , the second best scorer of the Sun season.
In the 2016-17 season Knight completed only 54 games due to injury problems. The 2017-18 season he sat out completely due to a torn cruciate ligament. In the summer of 2018 he was transferred to the Houston Rockets together with Marquese Chriss for the rights to De'Anthony Melton and Ryan Anderson .
Return to Detroit (Since 2020)
Neither with the Rockets nor later with the Cleveland Cavaliers , Knight was able to build on his old times from Phoenix times. Knight returned to the Pistons via the Cleveland Cavaliers in spring 2020.
