Gregory Wayne "Greg" Oden Jr. (born January 22, 1988 in Buffalo , New York ) is a retired American basketball player who was under contract with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Miami Heat in the NBA from 2007 to 2014 due to injury but was hardly used.

Oden was chosen first by the Blazers for his excellent physical condition and athleticism in the 2007 NBA Draft . Ultimately, however, he was mainly known for his vulnerability to injuries and never reached the level of performance predicted by scouts . Therefore, it is today classified by experts as one of the greatest draft disappointments in NBA history

Career

college

On June 29, 2005, Oden and his high school teammate Mike Conley, Jr. announced that he would be attending Ohio State University for the 2006/07 season . However, he had to sit out at the beginning of the season due to an injury to his right wrist. He made his college basketball debut on December 2, 2006, but impressed with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks. Steve Kerr referred to him as a "once-in-a-decade player" ( a player so good he only exists once in a decade ). On March 6, 2007 Oden was appointed to the All-Big Ten First Team and the All-Defensive Team and named the best defender in his conference. In the Sweet Sixteen tournament, Oden blocked a decisive throw in the game against Tennessee and secured his team an 85-84 victory. He then led his team past the Memphis Tigers and Georgetown Hoyas to the 2007 final, where the Ohio State Buckeyes failed despite 25 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks of Oden at the Florida Gators .

On March 26, 2007, Oden was elected to the Associated Press All-American team alongside Kevin Durant , Arron Afflalo , Alando Tucker and Acie Law IV. Oden and Durant became the first two players in their freshman year to receive the honor since 1990. In his entire high school and college career, Oden never lost a home game.

NBA

Portland Trail Blazers (2007-2012)

Prior to the 2007 NBA draft , there was a long debate about who would be selected first (Greg Oden or Kevin Durant ). On June 29, 2007, the Portland Trail Blazers decided to secure the rights to Oden in the first place. In September 2007, Oden underwent knee surgery, which is why he was out of the entire 2007/08 NBA season . He made his debut in the 2008/09 season . Since he did not take part in any game the year before, he was considered a rookie this season . In the first half of the season he came as a substitute for center colleague Joel Przybilla on the field, but in the second half of the season he was able to push him to the bench. Oden averaged 8.9 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game. With the Blazers he reached the playoffs, but then failed at the Houston Rockets . The following season 2009/10 started promisingly until Oden broke his kneecap on December 5, 2009 and was out after 21 games for the rest of the season.

On November 17, 2010, the Blazers announced that Oden would have to undergo another operation, which is why he would be out of the entire 2010/11 NBA season . After the season, the Trailblazers extended his contract for a year. However, in early February 2012 it was announced that he would have to undergo knee surgery again and that he would also miss the 2011/12 NBA season completely. On March 15, 2012, he was released from the Trailblazers. He later stated that he would skip the 2012/13 NBA season to heal his injuries.

Miami Heat (2013/14)

After the 2012/13 NBA season was suspended , Oden decided to make a comeback and signed a one-year deal with NBA Champion Miami Heat to play alongside LeBron James , Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh . On October 24, 2013, he scored his first points for Miami in a preparation game. Oden played his first official game on January 14, 2014, scoring 6 points and 2 rebounds in 8 minutes. With the heat he reached the NBA final. However, you lost the series against the San Antonio Spurs . Oden was used in three playoff games and scored no point. His contract was not renewed after the season and he couldn't find a new team at the start of the 2014 season. In August 2014, Oden, who suffered from alcohol problems, was arrested by the police after slapping his then girlfriend in the face and was therefore later fined and obliged to attend alcohol withdrawal courses.

Comeback attempt (2015)

During the current 2014/15 NBA season , Oden attempted his return by doing a trial with the Memphis Grizzlies . However, he was not included in the squad. In the summer of 2015, further attempts at the Charlotte Hornets and Dallas Mavericks failed .

Move to China (2015/16)

In August 2015, Oden signed a contract with the Chinese first division club Jiangsu Dragons . He scored 13.0 points, 12.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in 25 games before deciding to leave Jiangsu on February 1, 2016.

End of career

In October 2016, Oden announced that he had returned to Ohio State University to catch up on his college degree. He also supported the Buckeyes basketball team as a student coach. When asked if he would ever return to the basketball court, Oden replied, "I wish. It's over." (In German: "I wish it. It's over.") In 2019 Oden successfully graduated from college.

Return to the field

In 2018 he took part in The Basketball Tournament , which is endowed with two million US dollars , and in June 2019 he returned to the field in the 3-on-3 league Big3 .
