The Big3 is an American professional basketball league in the 3-on-3 game . It was founded in January 2017.

history

The 3-on-3 league Big3 was founded on January 11, 2017 by the musician Ice Cube and the media and music entrepreneur Jeff Kwatinetz in New York . As the first player, the league signed former NBA pro Kenyon Martin . On April 30, 2017, a draft process was carried out in which the teams selected players for their squads. In the first place, the Trilogy team secured the services of Rashad McCants . The league signed a television deal with Fox Sports .

Eight teams ( 3'Company , 3 Headed Monsters , Ball Hogs , Ghost Ballers , Killer 3s , Power , Trilogy , Tri-State ) with five players each took part in the league's first season, which took place from the end of June to the end of August 2017 part. The majority of the players were former professionals of the traditional basketball variant, including Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf , Kwame Brown and Andre Owens. At the end of January 2017, the new league hired well-known basketball personalities as coaches, including Gary Payton , Clyde Drexler , Rick Barry and Rick Mahorn and Allen Iverson (the latter acted as player -coach ).

The premier season was played on eight main round match days in eight different cities in the United States. As part of a matchday, each league team played a game in the same hall. The four best-placed teams in the main round competed in the semi-finals on a ninth matchday, the other teams played placement games. On a tenth weekend in Las Vegas, the final and the game for third place took place. Trilogy secured the first championship title of the new league with a 51:46 final victory over 3 Headed Monsters . As the best player of the opening season, Rashard Lewis was awarded. According to the league, the average number of spectators on match days of the premiere season was 11,000.

In March 2018, Clyde Drexler took over the position of league leader of the Big3, taking over from Roger Mason . In their second year of play, the Big3 increased their average attendance to 14,000. The Power team won the championship, and Corey Maggette received the award for the best player of the 2018 season . The championship team was supervised by Nancy Lieberman , who became the first woman to win the championship title in a male professional sports league.

At the beginning of April 2019, the league agreed on a contract with the broadcaster CBS Sports to broadcast the league games. Before the third season in summer 2019, the number of participating teams was increased from eight to twelve, plus Aliens, Bivouac, Enemies and Triplets . Joe Johnson , Greg Oden , Gilbert Arenas and Lamar Odom were brought into the league as well-known new players . The Triplets team faced the Killer 3s in the final of the 2019 season and prevailed with 50:39. Joe Johnson scored the decisive throw to win the championship and was also named best player of the season.

Set of rules

The game rules of the league deviate in several points from the 3-on-3 rules of the world association FIBA . In the Big3, for example, the team that first scores 50 points in a game wins (initially it was 60). On the playing field in Big3 there are three four-point circles outside the three-point line: If a player touches one of these circles with at least one foot at the beginning of the throwing movement and scores the basket, his team is awarded four points. The attack time is 14 seconds.
