Lamar Joseph Odom (born November 6, 1979 in New York City , New York ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA between 1999 and 2013 . With a height of 2.08 meters, Odom was used in both forward positions. During his career he was regarded as a versatile player who, for his size, had very good ball handling and game overview. Odom was never called up to the NBA All-Star Game , but won the 2011 NBA Sixth Man of the Year award .
Career
Early years
Odom was born in the South Jamaica neighborhood of Queens , New York. His birth father was a drug addict and his mother died when Lamar was twelve years old. He was raised by his grandmother, Mildred. He attended Christ The King Regional High School in Middle Village, New York for three years before moving to Redemption Academy in Troy, New York and from there to St. Thomas Aquinas High School in New Britain, Connecticut. In 1997 he was named Parade Magazine Player of the Year and, as a senior, was named to the USA Today All-USA First Team.
Odom chose the University of Nevada in Las Vegas (UNLV) in 1997 . The NCAA rules prohibit universities from paying financial compensation to their basketball players for their services. When it was revealed that Odom but from a University officer had received money, the coach of the team, Bill Bayno was fired, the university was only approved for parole in the NCAA four years and Odom then moved up to the University of Rhode Iceland , had but suspend the 1997/98 season. Odom played for his new university team for a season.
Los Angeles Clippers (1999 to 2003)
Odom was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers with the fourth pick in the 1999 NBA Draft . In his first season, he scored 16.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game and was elected to the 2000 NBA All-Rookie First Team .
In November 2001, he was suspended from the NBA for eight games for two-time anti-drug abuse. His points and rebound cut fell in the following two seasons and he was signed as a so-called Restricted Free Agent by the Miami Heat in the summer of 2003 .
Miami Heat (2003 to 2004)
Lamar Odom became part of the team the same year that Dwyane Wade was selected by the Miami Heat in the draft. Odom was able to increase his performance on the field to 17.1 points, 9.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.9 blocks per game and led his team together with Wade in the playoffs. That year he also played for the United States national team in the Summer Olympics and won the bronze medal with the selection.
Los Angeles Lakers (2004 to 2011)
Odom was given to the Los Angeles Lakers along with Caron Butler and Brian Grant in exchange for Shaquille O'Neal . In his first year, Odom suffered a serious shoulder injury and had to sit out the last third of the season. The Lakers missed the playoffs and brought their former coach Phil Jackson back on board after this season .
In the following NBA season his performance on the field was far from constant, but he steadily improved. He was able to achieve a triple-double in two consecutive games . In the playoffs, however, the Lakers were eliminated by the Phoenix Suns in the first round after seven games . In the 2006/07 season Odom had to fight again with injuries and in the playoffs the Lakers failed again at the Suns. The 2007/08 NBA season had some surprises in store for Odom: The Lakers secured the services of Pau Gasol , the young center Andrew Bynum had to sit out due to a knee injury and so Odom was used very versatile. The team reached the NBA Finals , but had to give up there defeated the Boston Celtics .
In the 2008/09 season , Odom was shipped to the bank and used as the so-called Sixth Man . He was mostly substituted on for Gasol and / or Bynum. When Bynum was injured again in January 2009, Odom was brought back to the starting line-up. After Bynum's return in April, Odom was brought back into the game by the bank. At the end of the season, he could look back on 11.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.7 blocks and 1.0 steal per game. This season Odom was able to win his first NBA championship with the Lakers . After the season, he extended his contract with the Lakers for four years for a total of $ 33 million. The following season, 2009/10 , Odom secured the championship again with the Lakers. In the 2010/11 season , Odom received the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award , making it the best substitute. He was the first Lakers player to receive this award.
Odom won the basketball world championship with the US national team in the summer of 2010 .
Dallas Mavericks (2011-2012)
The Dallas Mavericks announced on December 10, 2011 that Odom would be joining the reigning champions from Texas for the new season. He performed poorly earlier in the season after losing his cousin during the summer break and also sitting in a car that ran over a youth. That's why he originally wanted to take a break. On March 2, 2012, he was sent by the Mavs to the Texas Legends , but brought back only a day later. In early April 2012, the Mavericks separated from Odom, but without firing him.
Los Angeles Clippers (2012-2013)
On June 29, it was officially confirmed that Odom will return to the Clippers. He was transferred to Los Angeles as part of an exchange between the Clippers , Jazz , Rockets and the Mavs. With the Clippers, Odom could not meet the expectations placed in him. With 4.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, he played the weakest season of his career to date.
Move to Spain (2014)
After the season, Odom became a free agent . Although there was interest between the Clippers and Odom in a further collaboration, no agreement was reached. On February 18, 2014 Odom signed a contract with the Spanish first division club Laboral Kuxta . He only played two games for the club before being sacked.
New York Knicks (2014)
In April 2014 it was announced that Lamar Odom had been signed by the Knicks for several years. However, he did not complete an NBA game for the Knicks and was fired two months later.
Return to the field
In June 2019, he returned to the field almost four years after his collapse in the 3-on-3 league Big3 .
Private life
- Odom has three children, two sons and a daughter. His daughter was born in 1998 and his son in 2002. His second son, who was born in December 2005, died in his bed on June 28, 2006 of sudden infant death at the age of six months.
- Odom is known for his love of sweets. The Wrigley company made a duplicate of the NBA championship trophy for him, which consisted only of candy, after the Los Angeles Lakers won the championship in 2009.
- After only four weeks of relationship, Odom married Khloé Kardashian on September 27, 2009 .
- Early in the morning on August 30, 2013, Odom was arrested for driving under the influence of psychoactive substances and released the same day on bail of $ 15,000 . He was sentenced to three years probation and had to undergo addiction treatment.
- On October 13, 2015, Odom was found unconscious after consuming cocaine and large quantities of sexual enhancers in the Love Ranch brothel in the state of Nevada and was admitted to hospital in critical condition. Artificial ventilation could only be stopped after four days. He was able to leave the hospital for the first time three months later.
- In 2019, he revealed his sex addiction in his autobiography Darkness to Light . He slept with over 2000 women.
