James Caron Butler (born March 13, 1980 in Racine , Wisconsin ) is a retired American basketball player who played 14 seasons in the NBA .

Butler had his most successful time in the NBA with the Washington Wizards , where he was NBA All-Star in 2007 and 2008 . In 2011 he became NBA champion with the Dallas Mavericks , but was unable to play a playoff game due to injury .

Career

Butler grew up in Racine , where he had a tough childhood; up to the age of 15 he was arrested 15 times. In the 2002 NBA Draft , he was selected 10th by the Miami Heat . In his debut season, he averaged 15 points and 5 rebounds per game and was called up for his performance in the NBA All-Rookie First Team . Due to a temporary injury, he played only 68 games in the following season and only reached 9 points and 4 rebounds on average.

At the end of 2004 he was transferred to the Los Angeles Lakers along with Lamar Odom and Brian Grant in exchange for Shaquille O'Neal .

In 2005, he was charged with Chucky Atkins to Kwame Brown and Laron Profit of the Washington Wizards traded, where he received a five-year contract in the amount of 46 million US dollars signed. In 2007 Butler had his best season as a professional player, averaging 19.1 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. At the end of the season he was voted into the NBA All-Star Game ; his first of a total of two All-Star nominations.

In February 2010 he was transferred to the Dallas Mavericks along with Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson for Josh Howard , Drew Gooden , James Singleton and Quinton Ross . On January 4, 2011, it was announced that Butler had undergone surgery for a ruptured patellar tendon. He worked hard on his rehabilitation but could not ultimately be used in the playoffs . Even so, the Mavericks won the 2011 NBA championship.

After the season he finally moved to the Los Angeles Clippers . There he established himself in the starting five and moved into the playoffs with the team. In the first game in the series against the Memphis Grizzlies in April 2012, Butler broke his left hand. Nevertheless, despite the injury, he also played as a starter in the following games.

In the summer of 2013, Butler was initially transferred from the Clippers to the Phoenix Suns . In return, Shooting Guard JJ Redick moved to Los Angeles. The Suns immediately traded butler on and gave it to the Milwaukee Bucks .

Butler ran for the Bucks until the end of February 2014. It was already clear in February that the Bucks had no chance of the playoffs. The management then agreed with Butler to terminate his contract in order to force the rebuilding of the squad with young players.

In March 2014, he signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder until the end of the 2014/15 season before moving to the Detroit Pistons for the following season .

On June 11, 2015, Butler of the Pistons, along with teammate Shawne Williams , was traded against Ersan İlyasova for the Milwaukee Bucks . On June 30, 2015, Butler and the Bucks separated by mutual agreement.

He then signed a contract with the Sacramento Kings . Butler completed 17 season games for the Kings and scored 3.7 points. Although he drew an option for an additional year in the summer of 2016, Butler agreed with the Kings to terminate his contract early.
