Joshua Jay Howard (born April 28, 1980 in Winston-Salem , North Carolina ) is a former American basketball player and current coach. From 2003 to 2014 he was active as a player in the NBA , most of it with the Dallas Mavericks , where he was once NBA All-Star .

Career

college

Howard played at Wake Forest University from 1999 to 2003, majoring in Religion. In 127 missions he averaged 13.9 points and 6.6 points per match. In 2003 he was named Player of the Year at the Atlantic Coast Conference , having scored an average of 19.5 points per encounter in the 2002/03 season.

Despite his very successful college days, NBA teams weren't overly interested in Howard. The Dallas Mavericks secured the rights to him in the first round of the 2003 NBA Draft (29th place).

NBA

Many basketball analysts and journalists felt that Howard couldn't live up to the NBA's claims. Just two months later, the forward had found a way into the Mavericks rotation . Shortly thereafter, the injury to Michael Finley gave Howard the opportunity to be in the starting line-up of an NBA team for the first time in his career. He took this chance and rewarded Don Nelson's trust with 17 points and 13 rebounds in his first start against the Los Angeles Lakers . The season resulted in Howard being nominated for the NBA All-Rookie Second Team . In Dallas he played alongside Dirk Nowitzki and was considered the second option in attack after the German. In 2007 he was invited to the NBA All-Star Game . On December 8, 2007, Howard scored 47 points against the Utah Jazz, a career high.

On February 13, 2010, he was given to the Washington Wizards along with Drew Gooden , James Singleton and Quinton Ross for Caron Butler , Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson . There he injured his knee after just a few games and fell out for the rest of the season, which the Wizards finished in 14th place in the Eastern Conference . For the final year of his contract, Washington had the option of an extension, which the Wizards did not take advantage of. However, Howard signed a new contract in Washington over a year for just under $ 4 million. Also this season he had to sit out most of the games due to injury.

On December 16, 2011, Howard joined the Utah Jazz as a free agent . But he was not spared from injuries in Utah either. At the end of the season, his contract with Jazz ran out and was not extended.

On November 15, 2012, Howard signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves . The contract was valid until the end of the season. Howard was used in eleven games before tearing a cruciate ligament on December 14, 2012 . On December 20, 2012, he was released from the contract.

In the pre-season for the 2013/2014 season , Howard tried to recommend himself to the San Antonio Spurs for a contract, but received none. Howard then joined the Austin Toros from the NBA D-League to create a return from there to the NBA. He stayed there until February before his contract was terminated after injuries.

Howard made his last attempt to return to the NBA in July 2014 with the New Orleans Pelicans , for whom he appeared in the NBA Summer League , but was not signed up.

Coaching career

From July 2016 until the end of the 2019/20 season, Howard was the head coach of the basketball team at Piedmont International University in his hometown of Winston-Salem . At the end of April 2020, his move to the University of North Texas at Dallas was announced, where he became the coach of the newly established college basketball team.
