The Austin Spurs are a franchise of the NBA G-League , in Austin ( Texas is home). They have played their home games at the HEB Center in neighboring Cedar Park since 2010 .

history

Originally called the franchise Columbus River Dragons and was in Columbus ( Georgia resident). In the 2004/05 season, the Riverdragons could reach the final. There they lost 67:90 against the Asheville Altitude .

In 2005 the franchise was relocated to Austin and played under the new name Toros from the 2005/06 season at the Austin Convention Center. Derrick Zimmerman has been named NBA D-League Defensive Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons (2004/05 and 2005/06). In addition, Marcus Fizer was the NBA D-League MVP for the 2005/06 season. On February 22, 2007, head coach Dennis Johnson died unexpectedly of a heart attack after training with the players . After initially an interim coach led the Toros, Quin Snyder was hired as the team's new manager in charge for the 2007/08 season. After the Toros had cooperation agreements with NBA franchises from 2005, the Toros was bought by the NBA club San Antonio Spurs at the end of June 2007 . This made the team from Texas the second G-League team after the Los Angeles D-Fenders to become the property of an NBA club. In 2014 there was a rebranding ( German  : renaming ) in the name of the NBA franchise, as was already the case with the G League clubs Santa Cruz Warriors and Westchester Knicks .

Previously, the Toros had reached the NBA D-League Finals against the Idaho Stampede in the 2007/08 season , after winning the Southwest Division title with a record of 30 wins to 20 losses. The final series, however, was lost 2-1 to Idaho. At the end of the regular season , three players from Austin were elected to All-NBA Development League teams : Ian Mahinmi (First Team), who was loaned from Spurs, Andre Barrett (Second Team) and Marcus Williams (Third Team). Additionally, DerMarr Johnson was a 2007-08 All-NBA Development League Honorable Mention . On September 12, 2008, the Spurs announced that Wendell Alexis , who, among other things, was active for several years in the basketball league for Alba Berlin , was hired as the new assistant coach of the Austin Toros.

The 2008/09 season was also successful, as at least coaches and players could win individual awards. Marcus Williams was elected to the 2008-09 Regular Season All-NBA Development League First Team , and Coach Quin Snyder was named the Dennis Johnson Coach of the Year Award winner by fellow D-League coaches after scoring the Toros for the second 30th - Winning season in a row (32:18 record) and coached a team in the 2009 NBA D-League All-Star Game as part of the NBA All-Star Weekend 2009 in Phoenix. In addition, Malik Hairston and Dwayne Jones were All-NBA Development League Honorable Mentions in 2008-09 .

After the 2009/10 season, three Toros players were selected in All-NBA D-League teams : Dwayne Jones in the first team, Alonzo Gee in the second team and Curtis Jerrells in the third team. Alonzo Gee also won the NBA Development League Rookie of the Year Award . The Toros finished second in the Western Conference with 32:18 wins and lost 2-1 to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the second round of the playoffs .

Before the 2010/11 season, the Spurs announced that Brad Jones was the new head coach for the Toros. In addition, the company moved to the larger Cedar Park Center , where the Texas Stars ice hockey team played their home games in the American Hockey League . Even so, the season was less successful for the Toros compared to previous years. The team even missed participation in the playoffs after a 22:28 season. Of the players, only Marcus Cousin made it into the All-NBA Development League Second Team .

In the 2011/12 season, the Austin Toros got back on the road to success. The Texan team was able to achieve the best record in the club's history with 33:17 wins and took second place in the Western Conference. Justin Dentmon was named the 2011/12 NBA D-League MVP after a strong season . In 40 games he averaged 22.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists. Dentmon became the second Toros player (after Marcus Fizer in the 2005/06 season) to win this title. Eric Dawson was also named NBA D-League Impact Player of the Year . The playoffs were also successful and the Toros advanced to the final of the D-League championship against the Los Angeles D-Fenders . The series against the D-Fenders was finally won 2-1 after they were already 0-1 behind. The Toros thus secured the 2012 NBA D League championship .

In 2012/2013, the Toros moved back into the playoffs and ended the regular season with a record of 27 wins and 23 losses. In the playoffs they made it to the semi-finals, but there the team was defeated by the Santa Cruz Warriors and thus missed the title defense.
