Peter Forster introduces Udo W. Gottfried's work with the following words:

“The dominant element in Udo W. Gottfried's work is the human figure. That's his message, nothing else. That sounds little, but it is a lot, yes it is everything, because the human figure is the basic principle of our being. "

and

“As a multi-instrumentalist, he uses painting, sculpture, graphics, ceramics, installations and the new media. The human figure meanders through all of these genres. In painting, the silhouette or the silhouette dominates, in the case of wood sculptures, the rough cut. The notches dig deep into the figures. The course of the lines has something "rough", from which the facial features expressively peel out. "

- Peter Forster : Opening speech 2009

From Peter Forster's point of view, Gottfried's work is characterized above all by his attitude:

“It's an art that doesn't want to change the world and thus brings the world straight to its point. His art is not political, demanding, accusing, but also not harmonious, strategically balancing, structured and certainly not calculating. His art has its roots deep inside him, it follows his wonder of the world and his joy in it. His art cannot be anything other than posture. His attitude lies in the middle of life and is therefore deeply human. "

- Peter Forster : Foreword to GO. Little Instants in the Life of an Artist, 2017

In the words of Udo W. Gottfried himself on the occasion of his installation "cheerful to slightly cloudy":

"The element of free play is still the" background noise "of my artistic thinking and acting and not only determines my artistic life."

and

“All of my artistic formulations are approaches to the world, often playful and mostly beyond conceptual formulations. I play, therefore I am! An emotional state of being seeks its visual equivalent. It is a constant, joyful approach to yourself, even if you get in your own way from time to time. "

- Udo W. Gottfried : Introduction to the exhibition “In the beginning was the game”, in the artists' association Walkmühle, Wiesbaden, 2014
