The Raptors 905 are a team of NBA G-League , which in Mississauga in the province of Ontario is located. The team usually plays their home games directly in Mississauga at the Paramount Fine Foods Center .
history
In 2008, Bryan Colangelo , then President and General Manager of the Toronto Raptors , stated that Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (owner of the Raptors) was planning to have its own team in the NBA D-League (the predecessor of the NBA G League) to promote the development of young Toronto Raptors players. Several locations were considered including Hamilton , Oshawa, and Rochester .
In April 2015, the new General Manager Masai Ujiri announced that negotiations with the NBA were well advanced and that they could start in the 2015/16 season. One month later, the founding of the Raptors 905 was confirmed and the Hershey Center (Paramount Fine Foods Center since 2018), directly in Mississauga (Ontario), was their new home . The numbers “905” relate to the telephone code and is a common abbreviation for some places in Toronto . The team is said to have cost approximately $ 6 million. In addition, it has already been determined that the Raptors 905 should play some of their season games at the Air Canada Center , the home of the Toronto Raptors .
On July 7, 2015, Jesse Mermuys was introduced as head coach and Dan Tolzman as general manager. Tim Lewis became an assistant coach. Even before the first game, the new logo and new jerseys were presented on November 4, 2015. The Raptors celebrated their first win on November 22nd in the away game against Maine Red Claws with 98-87.
In June 2016 it was announced that the previous head coach Jesse Mermuys would leave the team for the Los Angeles Lakers to take the position of assistant coach. In September, Jerry Stackhouse was introduced as the successor.
In the second season, the Raptors achieved the big coup. With a record of 39-11 (second-best record in the history of the D-League), the team only won the Central Division and did more than sovereignly in the playoffs. After celebrating a "sweep" against Canton Charge and the Maine Red Claws , they defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 2-1 in the finals and thus secured the first title in the club's short history. Jerry Stackhouse was also named "Coach of the Year" for the past season, and Center Walter Tavares was named "Defensive Player of the Year".
