Walter Samuel "Edy" Tavares da Veiga (born March 22, 1992 in Maio ) is a Cape Verdean basketball player . He plays on the position of the center .

career

Club career

Walter Tavares only came into contact with basketball at the late age of 17. A German tourist discovered him by chance and was so impressed by his height of 2.20 meters that he sent photos of the Cape Verdier to the Spanish basketball club CB Gran Canaria , with which he had good contacts. They invited him to a trial session and finally signed Tavares in the summer of 2009. First played in the youth of the Spanish club, but already had two appearances in the first season in the B-team of the Canaries, in the EBA league, the fourth division , was represented. The seasons 2010/11 and 2011/12 he spent in the B-team of CB Gran Canaria and from January 2012 to the end of the season on loan from the LEB Oro club UB La Palma .

Tavares made his debut in the professional squad of CB Gran Canaria on January 6, 2013, on the 16th matchday of the ACB League , against Unicaja Málaga . That season he made 12 appearances in the league and two in the cup , but continued to play for the club's second team. From the 2013/14 season he was finally a member of the first squad and achieved 6 points and 6.8 rebounds in 35 games . In June, the talented center was selected in the NBA Draft 2014 in 43rd place by the Atlanta Hawks , but decided to stay in Europe for the time being. In the following year Tavares was able to improve again, he scored an average of 7.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game over the course of the league . Due to his strong performance in the Eurocup 2014/15 , in which he reached the final with his team, he was elected to the All-Eurocup First Team .

In the summer of 2015, Tavares decided to move to the North American NBA to the Atlanta Hawks . Here he had a difficult time and only made 11 appearances in the championship. He played most games in the D-League for the Austin Spurs , but also played for Canton Charge and Bakersfield Jam . In the 2016/17 season , Tavares left the Hawks after just one deployment and moved to the D-League to the Raptors 905 . With the Canadians he was able to build on his strong performances in Spain, won the championship and even achieved an average of 10.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game in 50 missions. At the end of the season he was voted All-NBDL Team of the Year and named Defensive Player of the Year. In April 2017, the Cleveland Cavaliers signed him for the playoffs, but Tavares only came on one mission before returning to the Raptors 905 for the 2017/18 season.

After just one game in the NBA Gatorade League for the Raptors, Tavares moved back to Spain in November 2017, where he signed a contract with Real Madrid that ran until summer 2020 .

National team

Tavares denied with the Cape Verde national team , the afrobasket 2013 . With his country selection, he was only eliminated in the quarter-finals against the eventual finalist Egypt and ultimately took sixth place.
