Ádám Hanga (born April 12, 1989 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian basketball player . Hanga initially played in his homeland before being selected by San Antonio Spurs in the 2011 NBA Draft . After that, Hanga was only active in the Spanish ACB league for up to a year in Italy and for Saski Baskonia in the EuroLeague . Here he was honored with the Euroleague Best Defender award of the previous EuroLeague 2016/17 in 2017 .

Career

Hanga is the son of a Hungarian mother and a father from Equatorial Guinea , who however returned to his homeland when Hanga was three years old. After Hanga made it into the Hungarian U16 youth team, he finally moved from the capital to Székesfehérvár , where he joined the local top club Albacomp. At the age of 17 he played in his farm team in the second highest division and had individual appearances with the runner-up Albacomp in the highest division NB IA. In the following 2007/08 season, he was mainly used in the first team, which started from the third place in the main round the play-off semi- finals returned, which had been missed the previous year. In the following years they missed the top placings before reaching the finals in both the national cup competition and the championship in the 2010/11 season. Both finals were lost to Szolnoki Olaj KK . From the youth and junior national teams, Hanga was promoted to the circle of the men's national team, in which he made his debut in the European Championship qualification in summer 2009. Like two years later in the 2011 European Championship qualification , Hungary missed qualifying for the finals.

Hanga had already been invited to the Eurocamp in Treviso in 2009 and 2011 , a renowned talent sighting to which scouts from the highest endowed professional league NBA also travel to take a closer look at the most talented players from Europe. Nevertheless, it was a big surprise that Hanga was selected by the San Antonio Spurs in penultimate place in the 2011 NBA Entry Draft , but before Isaiah Thomas . This made Hanga the first Hungarian to be selected in an NBA draft . Hanga had already signed a contract in Manresa with Bàsquet Assignia and the Spurs showed no particular interest in bringing Hanga into their squad immediately. So Hanga played the following two seasons for the Catalan club in the top Spanish league ACB . After the twelfth place with Manresa in the ACB 2011/12 League, Hanga failed again with the Hungarian selection in the European Championship qualification . Things didn't go very well with his club either, because the team slipped to last place in the table in the following season after only six wins of the season and was only able to maintain relegation due to the lack of licensing by the sporting climbers. However, Hanga himself had developed into a top performer of the team and was named Jugador de la Jornada on the 31st match day based on his effectiveness , equivalent to a Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match day.

After his two-year contract ended in 2013, Hanga stayed in Spain and moved to the Basque Country to the top club Saski Baskonia from Vitoria-Gasteiz , which at that time was still operating under the sponsor name Laboral Kutxa . The Basques were also a permanent member of the highest-ranking European club competition EuroLeague , so that Hanga now also played his first games in international club competitions. In the EuroLeague 2013/14 , the Basques achieved only five wins in 14 games in the second group stage of the 16 best teams and the penultimate place in their intermediate round group. In the national championship, things went only a little better when they remained without a win after the sixth main round place in the first play-off round against the eventual title winner FC Barcelona and were eliminated. Hanga, whose operating times and average point yield had almost halved compared to the previous year in Manresa, went to the Italian Lega Basket Serie A on loan to the former Italian cup winner Felice Scandone from Avellino in Campania , who operated under the name Sidigas for the 2014/15 season . The team could not improve with Hanga and again missed the play-offs in twelfth place in the table with twelve wins this season. Instead, Hanga played the playoffs at Laboral Kutxa, to which he had returned, but only completed one game when the team lost again as sixth in the first playoff round this time after three games against EuroLeague rivals Unicaja Málaga .

The following season, the team under coach returning Velimir Perasović and with Ioannis Bourousis, among others, reached the Final Four in the EuroLeague 2015/16 for the first time since 2008 , which was held in the Berlin Mercedes-Benz Arena . After the semi-final defeat after extra time against Fenerbahçe SK , Laboral Kutxa also admitted defeat Lok Kuban in the game for third place . In the ACB League they reached the play-off semi-final series against runner-up FC Barcelona, which was lost in four out of five possible games. After the successful season, however, left coach Perasović and the best players, including the Latvian Dāvis Bertāns moved to the Spurs in the NBA, the club that also separated from the long-term name sponsor Laboral Kutxa, which had emerged from the Caja Laboral . Hanga was also supposed to change clubs and made headlines with a proposed swap deal with FC Barcelona. Barter between players in the NBA is actually the rule in basketball, but in this case the Basque club president allegedly wanted to have two FC Barcelona football players swapped for hangas. The change finally failed and in the EuroLeague 2016/17 the otherwise newly formed team reached the play-offs in seventh place, where they remained without a win in the quarter-finals against defending champion PBK CSKA Moscow . Hanga himself was honored as the best individual defender of the season with the Euroleague Best Defender award. As a team captain , Hanga again achieved the Jugador de la Jornada award on the 34th and last day of the main round of the ACB League and was also elected to the “All-ACB First Team” of the five best players (“mejor quinteto”). As second in the main round, the Basques reached the semi-finals again in the play-offs. After his former teammate Bertāns made the jump into the Spurs NBA squad the year before, Hanga now also wants to force his move to the NBA for the following season. Before that, after successfully qualifying for the European Championship in summer 2016 , the Hungarian national team with Hanga will be competing with the best national teams for the first time in 18 years at the European Championship finals .
