The men's basketball championship 2017 (officially: EuroBasket 2017) was the 40th edition of this competition. The final round took place from August 31 to September 17, 2017 in Cluj-Napoca , Helsinki , Tel Aviv and Istanbul . For the second time in a row the final round tournament at sites took place in four countries, and after the first round of the tournament, the final round in the knockout system in Turkey took place Istanbul. According to the current plans of the world association FIBA , this was the last European championship every two years, as the World Cup finals were also postponed every four years to the odd years ( World Cup 2019 in China ), and should not take place again until late summer 2021. The tournament planned for 2021 was postponed by one year to September 2022 by FIBA in April 2020 due to the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
Allocation of the orientation
From the list of interested host countries, five countries finally submitted an application, of which Poland , where the European Championship finals last took place in 2009 , were eliminated, so that, like two years before, a joint final was awarded to four host countries : Finland , Israel , Romania and Turkey .
Venues
Cluj-Napoca , Helsinki , Tel Aviv and Istanbul were announced as the venues in December 2015 , with the final group taking place at the latter location in addition to a preliminary group. Therefore, two preliminary round groups took place on Asian soil , if one considers purely geographical aspects, but the final round in the European part of Turkey.
Attendees
Qualified for the 2017 finals were the two finalists from the previous finals and direct participants in the 2016 Olympic basketball tournament in Spain and Lithuania . The four host countries of the final round were joined by seven other participants in pre-Olympic qualifying tournaments in 2016 , who fulfilled their qualification target with this qualification participation . Eleven other finalists were identified among 27 qualifying participants in late summer 2016. For the first time, Kosovo took part in the qualification with its own selection.

mode
As with the previous European basketball championship in 2015 , the tournament was divided into a preliminary round phase, in which only group games took place in four groups of six teams each, and a final round in Istanbul, in which elimination games took place. In contrast to the previous tournament, no placement games were held for the losers in the elimination games, which were previously used to determine other participants in the qualification for the basketball competition of the Olympic Games. According to the new FIBA concept, the European participants in the 2019 World Cup finals will be determined exclusively through their own qualifying games.
