The 16th European Basketball Championships the men ( officially: Euro Basket 1969 ) was held from 27 September to 5 October 1969 in Italy instead. After 16 teams participated in the last European Championship tournaments, the number of participating teams was reduced to 12 this time. The title went for the tenth time - seven times in a row - to the USSR , which was able to return the favor in the final against Yugoslavia for its first European Championship defeat since 1955 in the preliminary round. Behind the silver medal winner from the Balkans, Czechoslovakia got the bronze medal.

The game was played in Naples and Caserta .

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in two groups of six teams each. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided against each other.

The two first and second place winners in each group were set for the semifinals and were already fourth in the European Championship, the two third and fourth placed qualified for the small semifinals and played for EM place 5. The fifth and sixth placed in each group had to play the games to 9th place in the European Championship.
