The fifth European Basketball Championship of Men ( official: Euro Basket 1947 ) was from April 27 to May 3, 1947 in Prague instead. The European champion was the EM debutant from the USSR , who was able to benefit from the successful Baltic basketball tradition after the incorporation of Lithuania and Latvia as Soviet republics seven years earlier . Silver went to the defending champion and host Czechoslovakia, the only non-European participant from Egypt to win the bronze medal.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in four groups with two four or two three teams each. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. The first two teams in each group were qualified for the intermediate round groups 1 and 2 and had already secured eighth place. The remaining teams started in the intermediate round in groups 3 and 4 and played places 9 to 14 among themselves.

Intermediate round

The first two of each preliminary round group played in the intermediate round in groups 1 and 2 for the first eight places. The two group winners reached the final and played for the European championship title, the second-placed were qualified for the bronze medal for the small final. The two third placed qualified for the game for 5th place, the last in the group for the game for 7th place.

All teams that had missed the first two places to advance in their preliminary round group played the European Championship places 9 to 14 in groups 3 and 4. Winning the group in the game meant for 9th place, while second place meant participation in the game for 11th place. The last two in the group, however, had to play for 13th place.
