The 17th European Basketball Championships the men ( officially: Euro Basket 1971 ) was held from 10 to 19 September 1971 for the first time in the Federal Republic of Germany instead. As in the previous seven events, the Soviet selection also secured the gold medal this time and was able to expand its collection of titles to 11 overall victories. In the new edition of the finals in 1969, the Yugoslav team only came second this time. With bronze winners Italy , a non-Eastern European team stood on the podium for the first time since France finished third in 1959 . The host BR Germany finished ninth in the European Championship.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in two groups of six teams each. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided against each other.

The two first and second place winners in each group were set for the semifinals and were already fourth in the European Championship, the two third and fourth placed qualified for the small semifinals and played for EM place 5. The fifth and sixth placed in each group had to play the games to 9th place in the European Championship.
