The 9th European Men's Basketball Championship ( officially: Eurobasket 1955 ) took place in Budapest from June 7th to 19th, 1955 . 18 teams took part. Host Hungary became European champion (for the first time), silver went to Czechoslovakia . The USSR missed gold for the first time in their fourth European Championship participation and this time had to be satisfied with bronze.
Preliminary round
The preliminary round was held in four groups with two five or two four teams each. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided against each other.
The two first and second place winners in each group were set for the final round and were already eighth. The remaining teams played in the placement rounds for the 9th EM place.

Placement round I
All teams that had missed the first two places to advance in their preliminary group played the 9th to 18th places in two groups. Rank one and two were necessary in order to be able to participate in the games for position 9. The third or fourth place in each group entitles them to participate in the game for 13th place, while the two fifth and last place winners had to contest a game for 17th place.

Final round
The two first and second place winners of each preliminary group played in a single group for the European title. This went to the winner of the final round, whose further order decided on places 2 to 8. So the runner-up got EM silver, the third placed EM bronze etc.
