The Swedish national basketball team for men ( Swedish: Sveriges herrlandslag i basket ) represents Sweden at international basketball matches.

history

The Swedish national basketball team first took part in the finals of the European Basketball Championship in 1953 , but in which they lost all seven games and finished last. Two years later, they defeated Denmark in their own first encounter . This was the only victory in the tournament, but that was enough for third from last and 16th place before the West German national team . In a field of participants limited to 16 teams was not represented in the following two events and then reached the finals again for the first time at the EM in 1961 , in which you could defeat England in the placement round in Belgrade and took 18th and penultimate place. Four years later it was enough to qualify for a field of 16 teams, but in the 1965 finals in the Soviet Union they finished last without a win. Another four years later they were represented at the finals in 1969 in a field of twelve teams. At the beginning they surprisingly defeated Bulgaria , but lost all remaining games and again finished last in the final round.

In the 1970s, the Swedish selection was not represented in any final round of a European Championship. After the Olympic boycott of most of the NATO countries for the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980, people slipped into the field of participants in the Olympic basketball competition . The only participation in a global finals was again without a win in the preliminary round, but in the placement round they still got two wins over Senegal and India . The final victory against Poland was of no consequence for the classification and so Sweden finished the tournament in tenth and third from last place. At the European Championship finals in France in 1983 , one of twelve participants remained completely without a win and again finished last. After only eight teams took part in the finals at the end of the 1980s , 16 teams were invited again to the European Championship finals in Germany in 1993 . The Swedish team was also able to qualify for this field of participants and defeated the eventual European runner-up, Russia , in the second group game . Due to the poor direct comparison , however, they missed the jump into the intermediate round and were classified in the 14th and third from last place in the end. Two years later, the field of participants in the 1995 European Championship finals was reduced to 14 teams. They remained without a win in six group games and finished last. After that, no more qualifications for a final round before you were automatically qualified as a host at the 2003 European Championship finals . But even in front of their home crowd they remained without a win in the preliminary round and hospitably allowed all other teams to go first in the classification of the 16 participants.

It was not until the European Championship finals in 2013 that the athletic qualification for a final round expanded to 24 teams was achieved again for the first time in 18 years, after the unbeaten German national team only had to take precedence in the qualification with the first Swedish NBA player Jonas Jerebko .
