The 23 European Basketball Championship of Men ( official: Euro Basket 1983 ) was from May 26 to June 4, 1983 in France instead. For the first time in its history, the European champions - apart from Egypt in 1949 - did not come from Eastern Europe when the Italian selection won the gold coup in their fourth final participation. Silver went to Spain , the defending champion from the Soviet Union won the bronze medal.
Venues
The group A preliminary matches took place in Limoges . Group B games were played in Caen . The games of the final round were played in Nantes .
Preliminary round
The preliminary round was held in two groups of six teams each. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided against each other.
The two first and second place winners in each group were set for the semifinals and were already fourth in the European Championship, the two third and fourth placed qualified for the small semifinals and played for EM place 5. The fifth and sixth placed in each group had to play the games to 9th place in the European Championship.
