European Basketball Championship 1989

The 27th European Basketball Championships the men ( officially: Euro Basket 1991 ) was from 24 to 29 June 1991 Rome instead. The defending champion from Yugoslavia became European champion, Italy went silver and Spain won the bronze medal.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in two groups of four teams each. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided against each other.

The first two teams in each group qualified for the semi-finals and already secured 4th place in the European Championship, the remaining teams played in the final round for 5th place in the European Championship.

All teams that had missed the first two places in their preliminary group for the subsequent semi-final participation played for EM place 5. The game was played in the knockout system against an opponent from the other group.
