The French national basketball team for men is the selection of basketball players from the French basketball federation FFBB (Fédération Française de Basket-Ball). She represents France at international tournaments and friendly matches.

history

After it was founded in 1933, the French national team took part in both the first European Championships in 1935 and the Olympic Games in 1936. The period up to the end of the 1950s was one of the more successful years for the French team. During this time the French won five medals at the European Championships. Another outstanding success of this period was second place at the 1948 Olympic Games.

The following decades were less glorious for the French. By the end of the 1990s, the team only managed to qualify for the 1963 World Cup and the 1984 Olympic Games. The team also played a subordinate role at the European Championships.

A trend reversal was in 1999 when the team with players like Antoine Rigaudeau , Laurent Sciarra , Jim Bilba first won fourth place at the 1999 European Championships and then the silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games. In the following tournaments after this success, more and more NBA players belonged to the French national team. Three-time NBA winner Tony Parker occupies a prominent position among them . Under his leadership, the French managed to win a bronze medal at the 2005 European Championships. At the EM 2011, the French team won the silver medal.

At the EM 2013 the French started with a surprising defeat against Germany , but improved significantly in the course of the tournament and ultimately won the final against Lithuania for the first time. The following year, the French won the bronze medal at the 2014 World Cup .

The final round of the 2015 European Championship was held in France, and the French also played their preliminary round in their own country. Against the eventual European champions Spain, the French were eliminated in the semi-finals after extra time. The game for 3rd place was won against Serbia with 81:68 . The French secured the sixth bronze medal at a European championship.
