Richard Dacoury (born July 6, 1959 in Abidjan ) is a former French basketball player .

Life

Dacoury is descended from an Ivorian father and a French mother. He grew up in Ivory Coast until he was six years old. As a teenager he played handball , volleyball and swimming before starting basketball at the age of 13. His first basketball club was Reims Champagne Basket, and as a teenager he moved to CRO Lyon.

The 1.95 meter tall Dacoury played for CSP Limoges for 18 years , was French champion nine times (1983, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1994 with Limoges, 1997 with Paris) and seven times cup winner (1982, 1983, 1985 , 1988, 1990, 1994, 1995 with Limoges). In 1982 and 1983 he won the Korać Cup with Limoges , the European Cup Winners 'Cup in 1988 and the European National Champions' Cup in 1993 as team captain. In 1990 he was third in the European Cup with Limoges. He was nicknamed "Roi Richard" (German: King Richard) in Limoges. His departure from Limoges in 1996 was not voluntary, the club did not give him a new contract. He then played for Paris Racing for two more years. In 1999 he was honored with a farewell game in Limoges. The number 7 that Dacoury wore at Limoges is no longer given by the team as an honor.

Known for his strong defensive work and athletic style of play, Dacoury was the French basketball player to win the most titles by the time he retired (caused by a ruptured Achilles tendon in 1998). In addition to his strengths in defense, Dacoury was one of Limoges' strongest players in attack, especially in the late 1980s and early 1990s: In the 1989/90 season he scored an average of 16.8 points per match in the French league and was therewith third best scorer from CSP Limoges. In 1990/91 he achieved the fourth best value of the CSP team with 16.9 points per game. Boris Diaw referred to Dacoury as a pioneer of French basketball because of the spectacular NBA- based play, especially in the 1980s .

He played 160 international matches for France between 1981 and 1992. Dacoury took part in the Summer Olympics in 1984 , the World Cup in 1986 and the European Championship finals in 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989 and 1991. During the Olympic tournament in 1984 he got an average point of 7.6 per match. At the 1986 World Cup, Dacoury was the third best French scorer (12.4 points / game). In 1991, he recorded 15.8 points per use during the European Championship, which was the second best value within the French team behind Stéphane Ostrowski .

After his playing days, Dacoury worked as a television commentator for basketball games and as a consultant for the Coca-Cola company . In 2011 he received the Gloire du sport award. In May 2019, he took over the position of Vice President for Development and Public Relations at Limoges CSP.
