Boris Babacar Diaw-Riffiod (born April 16, 1982 in Cormeilles-en-Parisis ) is a former French basketball player . He played in the North American professional league NBA between 2003 and 2017 and won the championship title with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014 . He was the captain of the French national team and became European champion with the selection in 2013.

Career

France

Diaw was born the son of the Senegalese high jumper Issa Diaw and the former basketball player Élisabeth Riffiod , who was one of the best French centers of her time, in Cormeilles-en-Parisis near the French capital Paris .

Diaw was considered to be one of the greatest talents in European basketball and was named MVP of the French league in 2003 , where he was active for Élan Béarnais Pau-Orthez . With Pau-Orthez, Diaw was twice French champion and French cup winner between 2001 and 2003 .

NBA

Diaw played in the NBA for two years with the Atlanta Hawks ; then from 2005 to 2008 with the Phoenix Suns . After playing a worse 2004/05 season , he moved to the Phoenix Suns for Joe Johnson . Diaw was voted Most Improved Player (MIP) in the 2005/06 season . He averaged 13.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 6.2 assists . However, he failed to live up to expectations for the next two years.

In 2008 he joined the Charlotte Bobcats with Raja Bell for Jason Richardson and Jared Dudley . He was a starter there and had his statistically best time (11.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists in three years), but with the Bobcats he only reached the playoffs in 2010. In mid-March 2012, Diaw agreed to terminate the contract with the Bobcats.

On March 23, 2012 he was signed by the San Antonio Spurs . There he won the 2014 NBA championship as a valuable role player . After two more years with the Spurs, Diaw was transferred to the Utah Jazz in the summer of 2016 . Diaw played at the Jazz at the side of his compatriot Rudy Gobert in the front court . In the Jazz he was in 33 of 72 games in the starting line-up and scored 4.6 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists. With the jazz he reached the second playoff round. The Jazz withdrew at the end of the season, his player option on an extension not, which Diaw was clubless.

After no offers from the NBA, Diaw signed with Paris-Levallois Basket in his French homeland. He ended his playing career in September 2018.

National team

In 2000 he was on the side of Tony Parker and Ronny Turiaf U18 European Championship. At the 2005 European Basketball Championships he was voted into the "top five" of the tournament. In 2013 Diaw won the European Championship with France. He won the bronze medal at the 2014 World Basketball Championship after the French team surprisingly knocked out fellow favorites Spain from the tournament in the quarter-finals. The French national team also won the bronze medal at the 2015 European Championships . Diaw also took part in the Olympic Games with France in 2012 and 2016 , but did not win a medal.

In 2009, during his playing career, he became a shareholder in the French basketball club JSA Bordeaux and took over the office of vice-president. From 2010 he was president of the association. In March 2017, he announced that he would end his engagement with the club on June 30, 2017. In October 2018, the French basketball federation announced that Diaw would take over the post of manager assistant for the French national team from January 2019 . From July 2019 he was also chairman of the first division team Metropolitans 92 , but resigned from office at the end of April 2020.
