Darrell Eugene Armstrong (born June 22, 1968 in Gastonia , North Carolina ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 1995 to 2008 .

Career

As a player

Armstrong was not selected by any team in the 1991 NBA draft and initially played with lower-class basketball teams in the USA, as well as in Cyprus and Spain . He signed his first NBA contract in 1995 with the Orlando Magic . In nine years in Orlando, the team with Armstrong never had a negative season balance. In 1999 Armstrong managed the feat of winning the NBA Most Improved Player Award for the most improved player of the season and the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award for the best banker of the season. In 2003 Armstrong signed with the New Orleans Hornets . In December 2004 he was swapped from there to the Dallas Mavericks for Dan Dickau . After serving as a finalist in the 2006 NBA Finals with the Mavericks, he was sent to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Anthony Johnson .

As a trainer

After the end of his playing career Armstrong was assistant coach of the Dallas Mavericks . With these he won the 2011 NBA championship.
